Martha Hamilton’s Treasure Box Arts and Crafts Swap

Martha KomLosy Hamilton was a lifelong lover and promoter of the arts and handcrafting, whether it was taking Girl Scouts to a play in Portland, serving as the town librarian, assembling a vast collection of costumes and props for island plays, singing in the Whalers, or creating her own art through numerous mediums. Martha was also involved in many of the nonprofits on the island—always willing to roll up her sleeves and get to work. As a way of honoring her memory, the Hall, Chebeague Parents’ Association, Recompense Fund, and other island organizations are creating the Martha Hamilton Arts for the Island Fund to promote and help sustain many of the things she loved. The first event will be Martha’s Treasure Box Arts and Crafts Swap at the Hall. A cover charge of $5 will gain you entrance to Martha’s Treasure Box, where—for instance—

you can gather up the pieces needed to make a sweater, carve a spoon, bake sourdough bread, make sea glass jewelry, or hook a rug. Have you ever wanted to dabble in watercolors, design a quilt, or make a dollhouse? Here is your chance to do it! There is no limit to the items you may take, but please leave a few things for others! Let’s carry on Martha’s work on the island. The Swap will include a children’s area run by island kids, where kids can pick out books and scoop up age- appropriate arts and craft projects. They can also get their picture taken in the mermaid or fisherman cutouts Martha painted for the Fishermen’s Fair and dress up in costumes from Martha’s Treasure Box. Here is your chance to be Dorothy for a day (Toto not available)!

DONATIONS NEEDED: Please contact Sam McLean ( 846-0510 or samhidval@gmail.com ) or Lisa Tucker ( 847-7944 or ravendrakeventures@gmail.com ) if you have items you would like to donate for the swap.
