CSU Bull Sale Catalog

Upcoming Changes to ARDEC – Calving Season, Irrigated Grazing, Sale Date, and Older Bulls

The ARDEC cowherd consists of 150 to 175 Hereford and Angus females. In addition to producing the bulls and heifers for the annual sale, they have been used for teaching, research, and outreach activities at CSU for more than 100 years. In recent years, the cowherd has experienced challenges that have limited these activities and affected overall production. As a result, beginning in 2017, several significant and positive changes will be occurring with the cowherd. These include: 1) Moving to spring (April-May) vs. winter (Jan-Feb) calving.

2) Grazing irrigated pasture under a center pivot at ARDEC (212-acre pivot east of feedyard) seeded into perennial grasses/legumes and grazed following a Management-intensive Grazing (MiG) concept. 3) Selling older bulls (20-22 mo. vs. 13-14 mo.) after developing them on summer grass. 4) Selling bulls beginning in January or February of each year.

Our intent is to better match our cows’ annual production cycle with environmental conditions (a concept we teach at CSU). We will also be able to provide more opportunities for students to learn via hands-on and experiential activities, and increase grazing-related research, teaching, and outreach activities. We can impose greater selection pressure on the herd and improve the marketability of our bulls. Most notably, we hope to

improve calf survivability and reduce production costs (i.e., wintertime feeding). As a result of these changes, several things will likely affect you as a bull buyer, such as: • Access to older bulls – These 20-22-month-old bulls will still be virgins and tested for gain, feed efficiency, fertility, PAP, genomics, and known genetic defects. • Annual sale in late January or February – Our next sale will be held in late January or February 2019, when we will offer our 2017-born bull crop for sale. We will notify you of the official date. • No bull sale in 2018 – The 2017-born bulls will sell in January or February of 2019 at 20-22 months of age.

HEALTH – Health certificates will be furnished on each lot and out-of-state transport clearance will be obtained. TERMS – Terms of the sale are cash or check at the conclusion of the sale. The management will settle any bid disputes. Announcements made on sale day will take precedence over printed material. GUARANTEE – All bulls have passed a breeding soundness exam administered by Colorado State University’s Veterinary Teaching Hospital. LIABILITY – Cattle will be taken care of for a reasonable length of time at the buyer’s risk. Cattle will be held for 14 days without Colorado State University Terms of Sale We look forward to the increased opportunities to provide Colorado’s beef industry with more from the ARDEC cowherd, including a consistent supply of seedstock bulls, research results from grazing experiments, demonstrations of grazing principles via outreach activities including an annual field day, and well-trained students in the science of beef cattle production. Please let us know if you have questions about these changes, and how best we can help you with this important transition.
