Ridge House, Brockhurst & Marlston House pre-prep department Newbury Weekly News

BROCKHURST (boys) and Marlston House (girls) are twin schools sharing the same estate at Marlston, Hermitage. They offer a unique education, with the best features of small single-sex classes and shared extra-curricular activities, at the centre of which is a magnificent Jacobean style mansion set in stunning Berkshire countryside. The school’s aim is to develop well-rounded individuals with liberal and enquiring minds who are confident in challenging their understanding. The particular personal qualities we value and foster in our boys and girls are enthusiasm, appropriate self-confidence and good manners. Specialist and qualified staff promote a family atmosphere for the 3-13 age range and prepare children for entry to leading independent schools to which they regularly gain academic, sport, drama, art, music and all- rounder scholarships. There are outstanding facilities with 21 acres of games fields within a 500-acre site, including a sports hall, indoor 25m swim- ming pool, tennis courts, art and design studios, performing arts centre, ICT suite, new Learning Development Centre with CreSTed status and a superb equestrian school. The school’s Gifted and Talented programme, called Quest Club seeks to identify early potential.

Children in Quest Club meet weekly for problem-solving and critical thinking challenges, the latest of which was to research, design, build and market a board game in six weeks. At Brockhurst and Marlston House, the nursery and pre-prep children have the advantage of a department designed specifically for their age group, adjacent to the main prep school, within its own garden and adventure play area. Children join the nursery class following their third birthday and most are introduced to the school day by attending the swimming sessions each Wednes- day morning for Toddlers and Parents. These are free sessions for those registered for the nurs- ery class. The curriculum is designed to meet the early learning goals, while extending each pupil according to their own pace of learning and development. Much attention is given to social skills and boosting confidence. The pre-prep children use all the facilities of the prep schools and therefore the transition from pre-prep to main school is smooth and automatic. For more information visit www.brockhurst.org.uk or call (01635) 200293. Come and see for yourself at the school’s open morning on Satur- day, May 13, 10.30am to 12noon.
