How often have we heard the term, let us ‘look at the bigger picture’, have a ‘bird’s eye view’ or let us ‘look at this as a whole’? In biodiversity conservation management it is crucial to know what a protected area can sustain both in its abiotic and biotic components. One of the tried and tested methods of determining the more obvious larger species is by doing an aerial census. This can be done either by a fixed-wing aircraft or a rotor-wing aircraft like a helicopter.
