TOREROS GUNNING FOR THIRD STRAIGHT WCC ,CHAMPIONSHIP The University of San Diego is coming off

their second consecutive West Coast Confer– ence Championship and third WCC crown in the past four years and head coach Jennifer Petrie has the Toreros focused on not only winning their third consecutive WCC champi– onship, but also advancing into the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament. The women's volleyball program has estab– lished itself as one of the premiere programs in the country over the past 15 years as they have made seven consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances and 12 trips in the last 13 years. This season, USO will use its experienced vet– eran laden roster along with several new key additions to propel themselves past the Sweet- 16 and into the Elite Eight. "This season, we will be looking to surpass what we have done in the past," stated head coach Jennifer Petrie. "We want to get back to lJJ the Sweet-16 and get past that and into the 6 Elite Eight. We have a returning squad that was pretty young last year, so they are really eager to out perform last year." One of the key components to this season will be the play of fifth -year senior Jessica Ny- rop, who got great experience playing for the USA A2 national team over the summer. Nyrop set a single-season record for assists in USD's run to the Sweet-16 in 2006 with 1,546. In 2007, Nyrop split time with Kelsi Myers as USO was running a 6-2 offense and recorded a team– leading 979 assists while helping lead the team to a .245 attack percentage. Backing up Nyrop will be the return of sophomore setter Kelsi Myers. In her rookie campaign, Myers got a lot of valuable time on the court in the 6-2 offense USO ran. In 2007, Myers recorded 547 assists while helping direct the Torero offense to a .245 attack percentage. Leading the Toreros offensive attack this season will be the return of AII-WCC first-team honoree, outside hitter Amy Mahinalani De– Groot. DeGroot had a break-out season as a sophomore in which she led the team in kills with 443 (3.99 kpg) and was second on the team in digs with 303. "Amy will be an All-American Candidate this year for sure. She is just an exceptional ath– lete and has the ability to be a go-to hitter for us," stated Petrie. Along with DeGroot on the outside will be senior Jaimarie Sutherland. In 2007, Suther-

land also came into her own, as she became a go-to type of hitter for the Toreros. She re– corded 191 kills as a junior in 78 games played. Sutherland had several key performances of over 20 kills and the coaching staff is expecting big things from her final season. In the middle, the Toreros will turn to junior Torey Ellick to fill the shoes of the departed Laurel Abrahamson. Ellick also came into her own as a sophomore as she saw extended play– ing time this past season. In 2007, Ellick was fourth on the team in kills with 211, was second on the team with a .344 attack percentage and second on the team with 97 blocks, 26 of which were solo. Sophomore Ashton Basch is also expected to see time on the court as well in the middle along with Ellick. Basch saw limited time on the court in 2007 due to injury, but she is healthy and the coaching staff is expecting her to be a very big contributor this season. Coming out of high school, Basch was a top-50 recruit accord– ing to Volleyball Magazine. Also returning for the Toreros in the middle is sophomore Colleen Carlson. Carlson saw limited time on the court as a freshman and is expected to miss the 2008 season with an in– jury. Two new faces to the Toreros who could also see time on the court as amiddle hitter are fresh-

Diego State Invitational where they will battle Albany, UC Irvine and their heated cross-town rival San Diego State. Following that tournament, the Toreros will get tested early to see where they stand on the national scene as they head to Los Angeles for the Holiday Inn CenterTrojan lnvitational,where they will face Hofstra, Oklahoma and conclude the Tournament with a 6:30 p.m. match against the host Trojans of USC on September 6. USD will then get to begin their home schedule with the USD Tournament. Teams fea– tured in this tournament will be Cal State Ful– lerton, Southern Mississippi and a very strong Texas A&M squad. The Toreros will have one more big chal– lenge to face before starting their conference slate, and that will be the University of Wash– ington tournament, where USD will face Seattle University and the host Huskies. San Diego will then begin their conference title defense at home on Oct. 2 against Gonzaga and will aim to make it a three-peat for confer– ence champions. A big change in collegiate volleyball this season will be the scoring change, from a 30- point game to a 25-point game. According to the NCAA rules committee, contests that were played to 30 points seemed to show a decrease in the intensity during the middle of those sets. The rules committee cited a desire to increase player focus and fan excitement as the major reason for the change. The fifth game still will be played to 15 points.All five games will still be played in a rally-scoring format. "I'm not sure if I'm a fan of the 25-point games yet or not. I think it is pretty short and it's going to take a lot of getting used to early on," stated Petrie. "Obviously, the intensity is going to have to be raised a lot early, but I'm not sure the best team is always going to win ."

men Jillian Wolpman and Sarah Schatzman. Wolpman comes to USD after a stand-out high school career at San Marcos High School as well as a strong career with the Austin Juniors Volley– ball club team. She was a USAV A2 Junior Na– tional Team selectee in 2008, a USAV A2 Youth National Team Participant in 2006 and was a USAV A2 High Performance Select Participant in 2005 . Schatzman comes to San Diego from the Bay Area and had a stellar career at Presentation High School. As a senior was named first-team All-Central Coast Section, was named first-team All-West Catholic Athletic League and first– team All-San Jose Mercury News. As a senior, Schatzman was named a Prep Volleyball Senior Ace (top-150) and was a US Army Reserve Schol– ar Athlete award winner. On the right side, the Toreros will welcome back AII-WCC Freshman Team honoree Ali Troost. As a freshman , Troost burst onto the scene and broke into the starting line-up early on and never left. Troost was a big part of a bal– anced offensive attack in 2007, as she recorded 263 kills, while hitting at a .244 clip. Returning at libero is AII -WCC honorable mention honoree Andrea Csaszi. As a sopho– more, Csaszi had a break-out type of season as she finished with 530 digs, the second best sin– gle-season total in program history. Csaszi aver– aged 4.77 digs per game a year ago, which was second best in the conference. Backing up Csaszi will be junior Kayleen Webster. A year ago, Webster appeared in 56 games and recorded 59 digs. Finally the last returner for the Toreros will be four-year senior Breanne Ogden. Ogden has been used in the past as a serving specialist, has also seen time on the floor as a libero and the coaching staff is thrilled to have her versatility back for one more year. The coaches can see Od– gen vying for time in the back row this season. "Bree has strong ball control skills, can pass well and is going to be a huge leader for this team," stated Petrie. "She knows what we are looking for from our seniors and I think she will be able to steer this team." With all of this talent, coach Petrie has put together a very demanding non-conference schedule in order to get the Toreros ready for the very strong WCC schedule and for the NCAA Tournament. JENNIFER PETRIE 10th Season as Head Coach Jennifer Petrie has done an out–

daughter Jane, as well as time with her husband Mark and let her top as– sistant for the previous five seasons, Brent Hilliard, take the reigns. Petrie, a San Diego native, has proven to be one of the country 's best young coaches-needing just five seasons to reach 100 career victories. Her 169- 69 overall record heading into the 2008 season ranks her among the winningest coaches in WCC history. Averaging over 20 wins per year as San Diego's head coach, Petrie has USD consistently ranked in the AVCA Division I Top 25 Coaches Poll. Under Petrie the Toreros enjoyed a banner season in 2004, finishing as the undefeated (14-0) wee Champi– ons, qualifying for the NCAA Sweet Sixteen, and earning a national rank– ing as high as No. 11 by the American Volleyball Coaches Association-all new USD school records. Recruiting and developing some of the game's best young players, Petrie has taken USD into the NCAA Tourna– ment's Second Round a total of four times, including winning both first and second round matches in 2004 to advance into the NCAA Regional Semi-Finals in Louisville, Kentucky. Following San Diego's appearance in the NCAA Regional Semi-Finals the Toreros had a school record three players earn AVCA All -America hon– ors at season's end. The 2008 season will be Petrie's 10th at the University of San Diego after serving as USD's top assistant in 1997 and 1998. She became the third head coach in USD program history in 1999, succeeding three-time WCC

standing job directing the fortunes of San Diego volleyball since taking over as the Toreros head coach in 1999. Honored as the 2004 West Coast Conference Coach of the Year, Petrie continues to establish the University of San Diego as one of the top

The Toreros enjoyed immed iate success under Petrie, finish– ing 23-6 and advancing into the NCAA Tournament's Second Round during her inaugural season in the fall of 1999. Petrie was a standout volleyball player at the College of William and Mary. She was twice named Colonial Athletic Conference Player of the Year (1990-91) and a two-time All -South– ern Region selection (1990-91 ). She gained national level playing experience in 1990 when she competed on the gold medal -winning U.S. Olympic Festival North Region Team. Her collegiate coaching career began when she joined the volleyball staff at Indiana State University where she served as top assistant from 1992 to 1993. Petrie then took the top as– sistant position at North Carolina, Chapel Hill from 1994 to 1997, before joining Sue Snyder's staff at the University of San Diego for the 1997 campaign . Petrie helped San Diego win back-to-back WCC Championships as the Toreros' top assistant in 1997 and 1998. Petrie played for the San Diego Juniors Volleyball Club and graduated from Mt. Carmel High School. In 1992, she graduated from the College of William and Mary with a degree in Art History and completed her Master's Degree in Sports Administration at North Carolina, Cha– pel Hill in 1997.

BRENT HILLIARD 8th Season, Associate Head Coach Brent Hilliard is entering his eighth season with the Toreros' volleyball program and his second as the Associate Head Coach. Hilliard served as USD's interim head coach for the 2006 season,while head coach Jennifer Petrie took the season off to spend time with her family. In 2006, Hilliard led the Toreros to the West Coast Conference championship as well as a berth into the Sweet-16 of the NCAA Tournament. He helped guide five players to all-conference accolades highlighted by the 2006 WCC Player of the Year Kristen Carlson . For his efforts, Hilliard was named the WCC Coach of the Year. Hilliard has been essential in San Diego's run of si x consecutive NCAA Tournament appear– ances and USD's NCAA Sweet 16 and WCC Championship season of 2004.Hilliard has done a remarkable job in recruiting and developing young talent. In 2004, Hilliard led a USO re– uiting effort that was recognized 25th among all Division I programs by Prep Volleyball. Hilliard brings a wealth of volleyball experience to the USO staff, earning NCAA Player of the Year accolades at Long Beach State and representing the United States at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona. Hilliard came to USO in 2001 after serving as the Head Volleyball Coach at Cuyamaca Junior Col– lege in 1999 and 2000.

In 1992, as an opposite or right side player at Long Beach State, Hilliard was named the NCAA Player of the Year, leading his team to a 31 -1 record. Hilliard earned All -America honors four times in his college career and was a three-time selection as a first-team NCAA All- American. In 1991 Hilliard propelled the 49ers to a National Championship, beating USC in Honolulu, avenging a championship match loss to USC the year before. Hilliard was selected to play for the U.S.A. in the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona. As the team'syoungest member, he helped the U.S.A. apture a Bronze medal with a victory over Cuba. One year later, iard won a silver medal in the 1993 Pan American Games. Hilliard wns a Bronze medal won at the 1991 World Cup. · liard continued his volleyball career as a professional in Europe from -1998, playing two seasons in Belgium and one season in the erlands. In 1996, Hilliard and the Maasiek Volleyball club from Bel– won the country 's championship and competed in the European hampions League.

STEPHANIE MORENO Third Season, Assistant Coach Stephanie Moreno is entering her third season as an assistant coach for the University of San Diego and will assist head coach Jennifer Petrie will all aspects of the game . In 2007, Moreno helped lead USO to its second consecutive West Coast Conference championship and its seventh straight trip to the NCAA Tournament. Moreno helped five Toreros earn all-WCC honors in 2007 . In her first season as an assistant coach with the Toreros, Moreno helped guide San Diego to its fourth West Coast Conference championship, and helped the team advance into the Sweet-16 of the NCAA Tournament for the second time in three seasons. Moreno also helped guide Kristen Carlson to the WCC Player of the Year, as well as helping five USO players take home AII-WCC accolades. Moreno, a 2002 graduate of USO, joins the Toreros coaching staff after serving as an assistant coach at Cal State Fullerton helping guide the Titans to a 14-15 record , only the fourth team in program his– tory to reach the 14 win mark. Moreno has also served as the head coach at Menlo Middle School and Menlo High School in addition to serving as an assistant for the City Beach Volleyball Club in Santa Clara , Calif. Moreno also served as an assistant coach at Menlo College for two seasons (2003- where the Oaks went a perfect 18-0 in 2004 to win the California Pacific Conference championship. WhI at Menlo, Moreno was instrumental in helping the Oaks improve from a 5-17 team in 2002 to a 21-3 team in 2004 also recruiting the 2004 CPC Freshman of the Year. Moreno , who earned her bachelors degree in English with a minor in communications , was part of the 1998 West Coast Conference championship Torero volleyball squad and was the only player to play in all 101 games that season . Both Moreno's 1998 and 1999 seasons , the Toreros advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament.

PAUL WARREN Third Season, Assistant Coach

Paul Warren is entering his third season as an assistant coach for head coach Jennifer Petrie and will assist the coaching staff with all aspects of the game.

Paul has been a part of USD's past two seasons WCC championships and their 2006 NCAA trip to the sweet 16. He is currently also an assistant coach for UC San Diego Men's volleyball team where in the past two seasons the Men 's team has doubled their win totals in each successive year. Paul helped guide UCSD's men's team to its best season ever this past year with wins over volleyball powerhouses UCLA and the defending National Champions UC Irvine. Prior to USO Paul had an established track record of improving volleyball programs. He served as the head coach at American High School in the Bay Area and while at AHS he gradually built the program into a competitive entity as the team made its first league playoff berth in eight years during his final season. He also served as the a club volleyball coach for the City Beach Bay Club from 2003-05. Additionally he served as the head coach at Sheridan High School in Englewood , Colo. where he again turned around the girl's volleyball program. He led the team to their first winning season and playoff birth in over a decade in just his second season at the helm.

He was a member of the Tritons men's volleyball team at nearby UC San Diego. During his collegiate career he played the swing hitter and opposite positions .

Coach Warren earned his bachelors from UC San Diego in 1992 in Political Science. He resides in Oceanside , Calif. with his wife Amber and five of their nine children .
