Welcome home Piping Plovers!

#6 | June 2025

About the Cover

Chebeague Island Council Calendar June 2025 Issue #6

Exciting News! The piping plovers have returned to Chebeague for a third year to lay their eggs and fledge their chicks. These tiny, gen tle birds are endangered and federally protected and need our support by giving them peace and space until the fledglings can fly (about July 31 st ).

Maine Inland Fisheries and Wildlife and Audubon has roped off their nesting areas at the Hook. There are heavy penalties (up to $25,000) for disturbing these tiny birds and for not following the rules posted there. No dogs are allowed at the Hook until after July 3 st . Dogs, drones, kites terrify the plovers. Leave them at home. Please respect the signs as you enjoy the beach with the piping plovers. About the Calendar The Calendar is published monthly by the Chebeague Island Council. It is available on-line at Chebeague Island News (www.chebeague.org) or www. chebeagueislandcalendar.com and delivered to every active mail box on the island. Chebeague Transportation Company Newsletter June 2025

Freight Policy Space on our ferries is limited, and we carry everything from groceries to home appliances. As personal and commercial freight increases, it’s more important than ever to follow our policies—and to consider using CTC’s barge service or Casco Bay Lines’ excellent freight service when appropriate—to help avoid delays. Commercial and bulk freight may only be transported on the 6:30/6:45am through 12:00/12:15pm ferries. Personal bags and groceries always take priority , and bulk freight will only be loaded if there’s enough room on the stern. Boat crew will not lift items over 50 lbs and will only load freight at their discretion. Only ten gas-powered appliances can be transported per trip. The sixth will have to wait for the next ferry. All unaccompanied shipments must be labeled with the customer’s name, and the office must be notified in advance. If your item is bulk or over 50 lbs, you must load it yourself. Freight fees for commercial and bulk items will be applied and billed by the office. If possible, please call ahead to pay. The deckhand may be able to help with billing questions. Left-behind freight : It happens! If your item doesn’t fit, the crew will recommend the next available trip. During busy holiday weekends, that might mean the last trip of the day— this is why we encourage moving large items early, before the “grocery rush”.

For full policies and current rates, visit CTCFerry.org.

Fourth of July Week is Coming! This is our busiest week of the year—please help us keep things moving:

“One More Night?”—Plan Ahead! Thinking of staying an extra night on Chebeague? Please plan ahead —parking may be limited. Our office is open Monday–Friday, 9:00am–3:30pm. If you’re unsure when you're leaving, consider buying an extra night —unused nights can be refunded. You can call the office during business hours to pay for additional parking if your plans change. All vehicles must display a valid permit or parking ticket —we

Buy tickets in advance and send them to your guests ahead of time. Label all your luggage —we see more lost-and found items during this week than any other time. Give yourself extra time for boarding and travel, especially midday.

Thanks to the generosity of the Casco Bay Island Association, The Recompense Fund will be able to boost its 2025 total grant giving to Chebeague nonprofits by between $9,000 and $11,000. In giving this one-time contribution, the association asked that Recompense distribute the entire sum this year. The island association, which has closed down after 70 years of serving island communities, was founded in 1954 to address year’s Recompense grants to the organizations. This year, Recompense was able to boost grant awards by $11,000, thanks to the generosity of the Casco Bay Island Association. The island association closed down after 70 years of serving island communities, and donated part of its remaining money to Recompense, with the wish that the entire amount be given out this year. At Recompense, we continue to carefully grow our endowment while remaining committed to annual grants in support of pollution in Casco Bay, rotting wharves and to improve ferry service. But membership had shrunk, in large part because of the success of islands’ nonprofits in taking up these issues. At Recompense, we continue to carefully grow our endowment while remaining committed to annual grants in support of Chebeague nonprofits. In the past decade, Recompense has distributed $450,000 to nonprofits, and we are pleased to be able to continue increasing the amount we make in grants each year. While most endowments adhere to a 4% spending rule, Recompense grants range from 5-6% of the endowment. Recompense has also expanded its grant-giving policies to include operation costs, to reflect the changing needs of the island nonprofits. Recompense strives to remain a long-term, steady source of help to island nonprofits working to keep the community healthy and thriving. Please go to https://www.recompensefund.com for detailed information on grant applications, annual reports and profiles of island nonprofits. This year’s deadline for grant submissions is April 15. The board will confirm grant awards by the end of May. The Recompense Fund invites all Chebeaguers to the annual celebration honoring island nonprofits, on Monday August 11 at 5:30, at the Chebeague Recreation Center. This is the chance to hear from our island nonprofits on what they are working on and what they are working toward, and to note this

Binkie Boxer, Marguerite Bowman and David Rich weighed in on the May photo, but no one answered all questions correctly. The houses abutting the West End "Cricks" were built for members of the Ricker family. They are owned by Gary Ross and the Bowman Estate. The fish house on the right was given to Poochie Ross, and he moved it across the Cricks. He left it to Pat Murray who moved it next to his house. The smallest buildings were outhouses ! June Mystery Photo The original owner was a skilled island builder who built the Houghton and Frizzell homes for two of his cousins, who were like sisters to him. Who was the builder? The last Johnson resident was Mildred. What was her occupation? Answers to: info@ChebeagueHistory.org

Notes From The Council

Volunteerism is a bedrock of this island community. Chebeague Island nonprofits take on tremendous responsibilities and obligations to support and enhance our lives. The town boards and committee members contribute countless hours and expertise to keep our town running. As we enter the busy season, please consider reaching out to a nonprofit and offering your time. There are many opportunities to support these groups that do so much. There is a volunteer information bulletin board in the Community Center, next to the library door. We invite nonprofits to post volunteer needs. There will be a list of the

organizations with contact numbers for visitors and neighbors to reach out to if they can help. Schoolhouse Seconds will begin accepting donations on June 1 st . This Council program has provided incredible “deals” to shoppers for years. The grand opening will be Saturday, June 21. The July 4 th parade is coming! Plan those floats! The theme of this year’s parade is “Heaven on Earth.” Our parade marshal is none other than the esteemed Sheila Jordan. Chedemption is ramping up! We’d love some help from volunteers to help sort and move bottles and cans off the island.

June 6-8, 2025

Chebeague Island has been selected for a wildfire mitigation project by Team Rubicon and the Maine State Forest Service. These services of being offered free of charge to our island community thanks to the efforts Kent Nelson at the Maine Forest Service. Team Rubicon is a veteran- led humanitarian organization that serves communities before, during, and after disasters and crises. Founded following the Haiti earthquake in 2010, the organization has grown to more than 160,000 volunteers across the United States and has launched over 1,100 operations domestically and internationally. On the weekend of June 6 -8 , 2025, Team Rubicon will be on Chebeague to trim vegetation in some high -risk areas to reduce the island’s wildfire risk. The town and members of Chebeague Fire & Rescue and the Chebeague Climate Action Team will be helping to coordinate Team Rubicon’s visit and activities. Details are still being finalized but we are looking for additional community volunteers to help support the Team’s effort s. We expect that we will need help with trucks and tractors to assist with brush loading and transport during the trimming efforts, help feeding and housing the crew, and other logistical support. A community dinner with Team Rubicon and Maine Forest Service is planned for Saturday June 7 th (same day as Town Meeting) . W e hope the community will join us for this celebratory gathering and show their appreciation for Team Rubicon’s volunteer service. Stay tuned - m ore information will be forthcoming on the T own website. If you would like to offer to help with the project please contact the town office at 846 - 3148 or email clerk@townofchebeagueisland.org and put Team Rubicon in the subject line.

CHEDEMPTION Celebrating 40+ Years

1,263,478* cans and bottles packed and shipped off the island thanks to thousands of volunteer hours… Maine was one of the first states to enact a returnable bottle bill in the US. Enacted in 1976 to reduce roadside litter and increase recycling it faced opposition from beverage distributors but passed into law with a peoples’ referendum. How it came to Chebeague… In the early 1980’S,Gail Miller, a member of the Island Council and Tom Calder, transfer station attendant, got chatting about all the cans and bottles being thrown away. They got the bright idea that maybe there was some way to recycle all those cans and bottles to benefit the island’s non profits. Gail took the idea back to the Island Council and the council and early supporters Mac Passano and Beth Howe helped get a trailer to transport boxes to Chandlers. Frank and Marianne Durgin and family built the shed still in use today. So Chebeague Redemption or Chedemption was born! Glass bottles were counted and packed into banana boxes and cans and plastic bottles into bags and Gail would back the trailer down on to Chandlers wharf.(An incredible feat, not for the faint of heart.) With a teen she would bribe with a soda and chips, they would stack the boxes onto pallets for CBL to take to Portland and then be picked up by a redemption center. 12 or 13 non profits and their volunteers would pack the boxes and the volume continued to increase. In the 1990’s the baton was passed to Laura Summa and Bob Earnest as trailer driver, and the school kids were stacking and shrink wrapping the pallets.

Chedemption continued to grow and getting enough banana boxes and a redemption center willing and able to take the boxes became almost impossible. Concern about kids safety was raised as some of the boxes weighed half of what the kids did. The task of packing and shipping became overwhelming. Unwilling to see Chedemption to die, as it was providing needed monies to the non profits and removing trash from the waste stream a group calling themselves The Baggettes stepped in. Banana box shortages and willing redemption centers on the mainland continued to be problematic. Then COVID came along. Chedemption paused as there were no redemption centers operating. Finally someone came up with trying to use CLYNK. (an idea we had ruled out earlier as bags with glass seemed risky)It was a MIRACLE!!!! No more counting and sorting and tallying and stacking and shrink wrapping and hauling to Chandlers. Thanks to all who help Chedemption continue. Casco Bay Lines who provide cages for the bags and free of charge transport them to Portland for pickup by CLYNK. In the summer season it’s often 100 plus bags in 8 to 10 cages shipped weekly. A HUGE THANK YOU to all the hundreds of volunteers for helping remove the thousands of pounds of recylable cans and bottles out of Chebeague’s waste stream. Thank You to all continue to make Chedemption happen! *No clue how many cans and bottles Chedemption has pulled out of the wastestream...LOTS!!!
