NOW YOU’RE COASTING With Casco Bay in our front yard, you’ll want to take advantage of some shore bets—here’s a few ideas.

Spend the day sunbathing and swimming at sandy beaches in Scarborough, Portland, Cape Elizabeth, Freeport, or the islands.

Rent kayaks or paddleboards and get out on the water with a licensed guide.

Lunch at The Lobster Shack at Two Lights while waves crash on the rocky shore.

Take the Casco Bay Lines ferry to explore a nearby island’s quiet, coastal community.

Pedal your way down the bay on the human- powered boat operated by Maine BayCycle, bringing your own beverages and energy. Cross-country ski around Mackworth Island in Falmouth, or alongside the sea at Winslow Park in South Freeport. Explore the hexagonal fort off Portland’s shoreline, accessible by kayak, private boat, or with tours by the Friends of Fort Gorges. Follow the walking trail along Portland’s working waterfront for an up-close look at fishermen and marine businesses operating from the wharfs. Take a cruise on one of the many wind- or motor-powered tour boats past forts, seals, and lighthouses.

Bicycle throughout Portland and South Portland on paths that hug the shore.

Take a driving tour of the five lighthouses in Greater Portland—all within 20 minutes of downtown!* And climb for free to the top of these towers September 14 during Maine Open Lighthouse Day.

The lure of the sea draws visitors to the region’s rocky coast, sandy beaches, and safe harbors.
