We visited with Jeff and Marla in their desert ranch home the day new seasons for Curb Your Enthusiasm and The Goldbergs were announced. An indisputably good day. Why Palm Springs and Smoke Tree Ranch? We’d been vacationing at the cottages here for years. We love the landscape, the peacefulness. Plus, it has incredible history. The last time we visited, Marla woke me up from a nap, saying a house came up for sale and we had to look at it immediately. I said, “Okay, let’s buy it.” Here we are. What is the vision that drove your design decisions? We’re small-time entertainers and want our friends and family to be able to enjoy being here as much as we do. We didn’t want it to feel sparse and cold like some modern design, but we also wanted to preserve the midcentury modern design of the home and the connection to Palm Springs and Hollywood history.

Is there special significance to the photography throughout the home?

I’ve been collecting and shooting photography for years—candid, black and white portraits— and I produced the Vivian Maier documentary. Actually, one of her photographs is hanging in the guest bedroom. It’s amazing work.
