Care and Cleaning / Finish Guide: Before your cabinets reach your home, they were inspected to ensure a quality finished product. Here are some recommendations for caring for your cabinetry. 1. As with all wood products, avoid excessive moisture. Our cabinetry is designed specifically for indoor use; we do not recommend it for outdoor applications. If storing your cabinetry in a place where the temperature and humidity levels are high, such as a garage or basement, wood shrinkage or swelling may happen. The cabinetry may lose its aesthetic features and function defectively. 2. After installation, wipe down all exterior and interior surfaces with a damp cloth to remove dust. Work on a small area at a time and wipe dry. 3. You may clean and protect wood cabinetry finishes using any commercially available wood cleaning polish. We recommend an emulsion-type cleaner such as Murphy Oil Soap, because it doesn't use wax, petroleum solvents or silicones. The extended use of wax polishes can result in wax film build up, while the use of silicone polishes can harm the cabinet's finish. Avoid spray-type polishes that contain petroleum solvents, as they are flammable and toxic if swallowed. 4. Use a damp cloth when cleaning normal household spills. After wiping thoroughly, dry the surface with a lint-free cloth. For stubborn stains, it may be necessary to use a mild detergent with warm water. Always dry the surface immediately. Never use abrasive cleaners, scouring pads or powdered cleansers. Do not allow oven cleaning agents to touch any part of the cabinet. 5. It is important to wipe spills up as they occur. Pay special attention to areas around sinks and dishwashers. Avoid dripping damp or wet dish towels over the door of the sink base cabinet. Over time, this moisture can cause permanent water damage to the door. For convenient unobtrusive storage, you can purchase an out-of-the way sliding towel rack. 6. Do not use a dish cloth to wipe your cabinets as it may contain remnants of grease or detergents. The Sunny Wood Finish: A cabinet’s face is what customers proudly show their friends and family in their new kitchen. While no one can see the detail of Sunny Wood’s quality cabinet construction, everyone notices and wants to touch the incredibly smooth and beautiful finish of our cabinets and vanities. For Sunny Wood's Stained Cabinets: 1. We begin with a smoothly sanded piece of hardwood or veneered plywood. 2. Next, we apply layers of stain and inspect it against a standard. 3. After a sufficient number of stain layers are applied according to our standards, we evenly spray on an acid catalyst to accelerate the drying process. 4. A sealer is then applied. 5. The hardwood piece is placed in an industrial drying environment to ensure the stain will not fade and the sealer can cure properly. 6. Next, we sand the piece with a fine grit sandpaper. 7. We again inspect against a standard to ensure the piece is within our color parameters. 8. Then an acid catalyzed topcoat is applied, and the piece is again dried.

We have a similar process for painted pieces: 1. We begin with a smoothly sanded piece of hardwood or veneered plywood.

2. Next, we apply several layers of a wood conditioner/sealer to prepare the wood to accept paint evenly. 3. The hardwood or plywood piece is painted the proper color and inspected against a standard. 4. After allowing the piece to dry, a sealer is rolled on by hand. 5. The hardwood or plywood is then subjected to a specific wavelength of ultraviolet light to catalyze and harden the sealer. 6. Next, we sand with a fine grit sandpaper. 7. We again inspect against a standard to ensure the piece is within our color parameters. 8. Then an acid catalyzed topcoat is applied, and the piece is again dried. What is significant about our process is the labor-intensive nature required to achieve the finish that we believe our customers deserve. We use a pre-catalyzed conversion varnish. Why is that important? · Conversion varnish is more expensive than traditional lacquer. It may cost two times more than a traditional lacquer. · Conversion varnish has more suspended solids, has a higher buildup, and is significantly more durable than traditional lacquer finishes. · It has 2 components: a post catalyst that chemically cures the finish which requires the mixing of an independent pre-catalyst with the varnish itself. · This process is a delicate one since the mixture must have the correct ratio of the two chemicals in order to harden properly. But, with its higher solid content of 40% - 60% by volume and a dried film density that's twice that of a traditional lacquer's, conversion varnish takes fewer coats for a complete build and a satisfactory film density. Because of its ability to cure (harden) chemically, drying time is much shorter than that of traditional varnish and takes more finesse in terms of even application. That's why it cannot be completed in the field and must be completed in a controlled factory environment. Even though it costs more, we can build and ship your cabinets more quickly since they're drying faster. The results speak for themselves. Conversion varnish is more durable and has a higher elasticity, which allows it to hold up better through wood joint expansion. That expansion ability is a key component. Conversion varnish "gives" a bit with wood movement. And since all hardwood must expand or contract with changes in temperature and humidity, having a finish that will flex with the wood means you are far less likely to experience those annoying hairline cracks in your cabinet face-frame joints. Thank you and enjoy your Sunny Wood cabinets! Environmental Effects: Under normal circumstances, all wood products contain some moisture and it easily exchanges moisture with the surrounding environment. This affects all wood products even after finishing. Finishing the wood does slow the process, but it will still react to changes in humidity levels. When humidity is high, the wood will expand in response to the absorption of water. When the humidity is low, the wood will contract with the loss of humidity. Wood will not change in size or shape unless humidity levels change. When exposed to high humidity wood will primarily change in width and thickness. Normal minor variations in humidity will cause imperceptible minor dimensional responses in the wood. It is recommended that a 40 to 50% humidity level be maintained in the household to avoid environmental changes in your cabinetry. Extreme changes in humidity levels, 80% or above and 20% below can cause issues. Wood performs best in controlled environments. Problems associated with warping are usually the result of conditions at site storage, poor installation, or use. The effect of moisture can include panel expansion and contraction, joint separation (especially in mitered joints), and bowing, expansion, or contraction of frame Disclaimers:

stiles and rails. Product failure is most prominent in high moisture conditions and environments. These include waterfront properties and coastal regions. Moisture control is most important in these environments and is highly recommended to help maintain your Sunny Wood cabinetry. Painted Wood Cabinets: Expansion and contraction can create open joints in the finish of painted cabinetry. This is a normal occurrence. An open joint is not considered a defect and is widely accepted in the cabinet industry. The finish will still protect the surface, and the structural integrity of the joint should not be affected. These issues are shared by every manufacturer of painted wood cabinets and are not unique to Sunny Wood. Wood may expand and contract differently from cabinet to cabinet as wood is a natural material. Even joints in the same cabinet may behave differently. Some joined wood may not show any joint lines, others may be slightly visible, while others may be easily visible joint lines. Joint lines may also appear due to repeated impacts from everyday use if soft-close hinges are not installed. An exposed wood joint can be damaged from exposure to water or high moisture levels. Therefore, wipe off any excess moisture from cabinet surfaces as soon as possible. Discoloration: All paints, especially lighter colors, are susceptible to discoloration due to airborne particles such as those caused by cooking, grilling, tobacco smoke, fireplaces, and candles. Prolonged exposure to artificial light may alter the finish color. Moisture may discolor the finish. Installation: It is extremely important that all base cabinets are perfectly squared during installation for proper drawer alignment. This should be verified before countertop installation. Stained Wood Cabinets: Solid wood will expand or contract with changes in temperature and humidity. Such conditions are not indicative of faulty materials or craftsmanship. In the winter, when the temperature falls and humidity levels are low, contraction may cause a narrow unfinished line on stained wood cabinets. To blend these lines into the finished wood, apply a pigmented furniture polish. Maintaining a consistent color is a common challenge in any industry using a natural product like wood that has inherently different color due to grain variations. It is important to recognize these differences and understand that every product made with wood will vary slightly from cabinet to cabinet and even within a cabinet door or other component. The Effects of Exposure to Light: Exposure to light will change the color of wood in a short time. When purchasing any wood product, it is important to understand that the sample or display you are making your selection from may be aged. Therefore, it will represent what your cabinets may look like in time and will not represent what they will look like when they are new from the factory. Conversely, a freshly produced product will match more closely with your freshly produced cabinets but will not represent the way they look when aged.

Sunny Wood kitchen collections can be generally categorized by the type of door configuration that each collection has. These door configurations are known as either "Inset Door" or "Overlay Door" configurations. "Inset Door" kitchen collections have doors and drawers that are set within the face-frame of the cabinet. Inset doors and drawers require added attention to detail from a woodworking perspective and enhance the overall effect of fine-furnishings related design features. "Overlay" doors and drawers are configured so that the door and drawers sit on top of the cabinet face-frame. This design feature gives extra emphasis to the door molding and edge details of the door and drawers as they are the most prominent design feature on this style of cabinet.
