FIRM OVERVIEW

OUR VIEW Our directive is to thoroughly understand the client’s operation and together plan an environment that promotes productivity and worker satisfaction. To achieve that, our first step is to develop a comprehensive program, which begins with seeking answers to critical questions:

What are your organization’s mission, philosophy, structure, goals?

What is your organization’s direction regarding sustainable design?

Who are your employees and what are their tasks?

How do departments interact and, most importantly, how do you plan to grow the business and shape the future?

we provide bridges between creative thinking and real-world needs. Finally, we produce complete and detailed construction documents that encom- pass every aspect of the building and engineer- ing phases. JRS is also available to manage the entire construction process to your advantage. At your option, our professionals will write the permits, manage cost-control, specify furniture, and even commission artwork. Our in-depth knowledge of code requirements and local building departments enables us to expedite the permit process. At every level we monitor progress and devise solutions, ensuring an on- time and on-budget outcome with JRS as your single point of responsibility.

Next, we begin the creative process, translating all this data and information into an architectural vision. Our design team creates concept drawings allowing you to visually evaluate specific solutions. Based on your input and guidance, the JRS team walks you through the entire process, creating a design direction that satisfies your criteria. There are many tools and assets we bring to bear along the way. Our sample library - one of the most comprehensive in the industry - allows us to select the precise materials that will optimize your design’s look and functionality. JRS can then use 3D modeling to take you on a virtual “tour” of the new environment allowing you to experience the look, feel, texture, color and dimensions of the finished space. At every stage

CONSISTENCY, COMPLETENESS & QUALITY

JRS promotes consistency, completeness and quality by utilizing standard forms, data sheets, questionnaires and report formats while reviewing drawings, preforming field investigations, conducting interviews or preparing building and site reports. Quality control is maintained by periodically conducting audits of procedures and processes, making sure critical steps are being taken for consistent and comprehensive services. Because the same team develops the project from concept to completion, the original intent is never compromised - rather, it gathers strength and integrity. Working in unison inspires team members to do their best work. For example, when Interior Design contributes ideas at an early stage, the insights can influence planning of the exterior design. It is our experience that this interplay evokes the best total design solutions. The entire JRS staff is committed to the same goal: create the highest standards of beauty and sustainability in alignment with our client’s goals.

PROJECT Interior. New Medical Office.

LOCATION Westbury, New York

AREA 3,000 Sq Ft

___________________________________________________________________________

___________________________________________________________________________

Named one of the Best Doctors by New York Magazine and Newsday, our client decided to transition from a group practice to his own branded eye care approach and engaged JRS to infuse functionality and originality in the design of this new ophthalmic center. Sitting down to understand the doctor’s vision for the practice, tasks to be carried out by staff and challenges posed by the site, empowered our team to deliver space that is efficient and memorable. Sensitive to the travel needs of his patients, the client opted to lease in an office building located close to his patient base. While the venue was ideal, the available space was smaller than desired, requiring our designers to maximize a constricted setting. Resulting design features include primary and intermediate waiting areas to distribute progressing patients; custom designed exam room furniture for expanded ease of motion in smaller layouts; reduced physical file space utilizing “cloud” electronic record storage.

A vibrant color palette, inspired by American-abstract artist Harold Krisel – our client’s father-in-law - helped us to elevate the patient experience. Original works of Krisel’s art have been installed throughout the facility, and select color walls in each exam room play off the artwork with a visual pop. Blue LED cove lighting integrated into the architecture adds to the ambience while sensors in each exam room automatically adjust lighting as instruments are picked up and used. Creative planning allowed our client’s full program to be accommodated with generous welcome / waiting areas, 6 exam rooms, 2 doctor’s offices, 2 nurse’s stations, business/administrative offices and staff lounge. We also created a testing area to house the practice’s high-tech diagnostic scanners and lasers. Outstanding for its efficient and entertaining design, this center has been attracting and retaining patients and professional staff alike.

PROJECT Interior. Outpatient and ER Renovation.

LOCATION Bethpage, New York

AREA 2,800 Sq Ft

___________________________________________________________________________

___________________________________________________________________________

To meet the objective of connecting the two areas, a new corridor was designed to allow direct access to both units. A new set of rated control doors were designed into this added corridor to facilitate ingress and egress from both spaces. By capturing underutilized offices, a new outpatient waiting area was created. This provided privacy from the busy emergency department waiting room. To accommodate the new CT scan machine, an area was identified that not only provided appropriate accessibility but also was in a section of the building that was just one story. This in turn resulted in reducing costs for the hospital since less lead shielding was required. JRS also was able to identify an additional area for a new outpatient cardiology suite through better space utilization in the project area. This cardiac CT suite is also shared by the emergency department further providing increased efficiently and better asset utilization for St. Joseph Hospital.

With only 50 feet separating the outpatient and emergency room entrances, St. Joseph Hospital was looking to gain efficiencies by connecting the two areas for use of CT scanners by the emergency room patients along with seeking to increase efficiencies for inpatient and outpatient registrations. Additionally, they were looking to reconfigure space to account for a new CT scan machine and its associated control room. As JRS approached this project, a critical component was that both the outpatient aka ambulatory section and the emergency room were to remain open during construction. Therefore, careful planning and effective project management were required in order to appropriately phase this project. Maintaining patient and staff circulation was especially critical during the construction phase.

PROJECT Interior. Laboratories

LOCATION Brooklyn, New York

___________________________________________________________________________

___________________________________________________________________________

In assessing their allocation and utilization of space, New York Methodist Hospital underwent a process to determine which laboratories could be relocated thereby taking advantage of various operational synergies and efficiencies such as improved workflow. The scope also included ensuring the laboratories were current with the new codes. JRS worked with the Hospital on this initiative that strategically relocated and upgraded a series of laboratories, ultimately not only on the same floor but also adjacent to each other. Subsequently, JRS designed the new laboratories that spanned about 15,000 square feet in total. Those slated for this effort included the Histology Lab, Cytogenetics Lab, Culture Lab, Cobalamin / DNA Lab and Cobalamin / Bio- Chemistry Labs. A decontamination area was also designed for the Cobalamin Lab and Cytogenetics Lab.

As part of this design work, the JRS team was asked to consider future construction and expansion needs of the hospital. Therefore, a much closer examination of the infrastructure occurred which resulted in additional project scope to account for these desired upgrades. The JRS Team worked closely with the Doctors and Managers of the impacted laboratories to ensure program needs were met and labs were designed in an efficient manner. Given that the construction occurred in an operating facility, special consideration was paid to safety, noise, dust and general contamination during the build out. The Project Team also redesigned / repurposed the existing lab spaces to resolve ongoing space needs for the hospital. This retrofit accommodated additional laboratory space, laboratory storage, private offices and a technician break area.

When it came time to move to expanded quarters, the doctors at this growing practice turned to JRS Architect, P.C. to design a welcoming environment in which to provide the highest level of neurology care available. This new location is home to the Hitachi Oasis MR system, state of the art for open MRI’s. Delivering an unobstructed view that puts even difficult patients at ease, the center is the first to offer this technology in the Tri-State-Area. An optional Echelon MRI is also on site. ___________________________________________________________________________

___________________________________________________________________________

JRS was retained by Neurological Surgery, P.C., the largest private neurosurgery practice in the Tristate area, to design a flagship location to accommodate expanded medical services as well as to function as an executive headquarters. The largest of the group’s eight Long Island offices, the facility is home to many of NSPC’s new physicians and will help broaden the range of diagnostic, management and treatment modalities offered to patients. Visitors are greeted in a spacious reception area with comfortable seating. To create more of a casual setting, the design team selected hand painted beadboard paneling for the reception counter, columns and dividers.

The refined pattern of beadboard provides a luminous back drop that puts patients at ease. To serve pediatric patients, there’s a dedicated examining room and waiting area with toys, bright colors and supplies designed to appeal to young patients. NSPC’s administrative needs at this location are supported by a custom conference room for board and staff meetings and ample office space for support teams. An employee lounge with kitchen amenities is a popular place to unwind throughout the day. The office houses some of the most advanced medical technologies including Fundus Photography utilizing a specialized microscope to photograph the interior surface of the eye and Optical Coherence Tomography, an optical signal processing system for obtaining high definition three-dimensional images from biological tissue.

___________________________________________________________________________

For our second assignment with NSPC, one of the largest neurosurgical groups in the U.S., JRS was called in to refresh the look and feel of an existing location. Having moved to this landlord designed space 5 years previously and with materials and finishes now showing considerable wear, the doctors asked the JRS team to provide a new warm, more inviting environment that would stand up to the rigors of a busy practice. Since this location is also home to NSPC’s marketing staff, an additional challenge was to achieve balance between a patient care setting and one that serves the business. Walking the client through the process of different colors and materials, JRS developed a palette that was the perfect solution, providing textural warmth

and character in tones people wouldn’t tire of.

Our designers selected a chestnut color scheme for the walls and floors to compliment the nutmeg stained doors. In the reception/waiting area, we added mahogany stained woods for the custom front desk, chair rails and molding as well as new seating to warm up the space and contrast the doors. To accommodate the practice’s marketing team, JRS worked on a design to enhance the conference room, adding generous storage space which matches a new conference table and credenza. A touchdown station for visiting physicians is also part of the upgrade. Exam rooms and private offices were brightened with new wall covering and paint and new window treatments were specified throughout. Our design juxtaposes the complexity of a medical specialty with an environment that embraces patients and staff.

Located in a large mixed use building complex, Princeton Plastic Surgeons new office offers street side access to its patients. This interior fit out project included a large reception and waiting area, four exam rooms, one procedure room, an office area, a pantry and other support spaces. JRS was responsible for designing the space ensuring it was utilized as efficiently as possible so to minimize their overall square footage requirements. This involved working closely with the client to understand their current and anticipated needs. JRS’ significant experience working in this building further expedited the process.

Interior design was led by a healthcare specialist. A wave pattern was selected as a consistent theme throughout the space, being used in the carpet and soffits. Additionally, a textured wall material in a similar pattern was used to cover the main wall in the waiting area. This space was further accentuated by a large lotus flower pendant light fixture creating a comfortable environment for those waiting as well as creating some intrigue for those passing by. The finishes and color palette selected were warm and soothing. As expected in a healthcare setting, durable and non-porous materials were used such as resilient sheet flooring, solid surface countertops in all exam rooms and laminate doors. Taking queues from hospitality design, this medical office space offers patients a relaxing and calming facility that is very efficient and effective for medical staff.

JRS Architect, P. C. was engaged for preliminary design and for development of baseline construction drawings for new and renovated imaging suites. The drawings also included millwork. Part of the effort focused on developing a repeatable phased approach, acknowledging the need for healthcare facilities to remain functional during construction. The first project involved two imaging suites at Indianapolis’ VA Hospital. One suite was a Varian On Board Imaging Suite which provides Image Guided Radiation Therapy. This technology delivers improved tumor tracking using high resolution and low dose digital imaging in the treatment room.

The second suite is a Varian Truebeam Suite which uses digital imaging to address complex clinical cases such as those with lung, liver, head and neck and others. JRS sent its staff to Indianapolis to field survey the existing spaces in order to modify the baseline set of construction drawings. Given that the hospital is operated by a Federal Agency, the drawings also needed to be in compliant with Federal Construction Standards (e.g. finishes, lighting). As expected, the VA Hospital required a phasing plan so that the hospital could remain functional while the renovation was being completed. In this scenario, a temporary partition and door were required to isolate the construction area from the active hospital functions and patient care. Given the success of this Design Build model, West Rac is anticipated to continue using this approach as they partner with Varian Medical Systems and JRS Architect, P.C. throughout the U.S.

In order to better serve the surrounding community, South Nassau Communities Hospital partnered with a nationally recognized company specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders. This Sleep Lab was combined with South Nassau Communities Hospital bariatric treatment program as most patients suffering from this condition can also develop sleeping problems. As the lead architect, JRS Architect, P.C. coordinated identifying program requirements between the two parties in order to develop a cohesive design. These requirements included compliance with guidelines of Article 12 for Healthcare as enforced by the New York State Department of Health.

The final solution was unique in that patient treatment rooms departed from a traditional clinic style setting. Rather, they were designed as a bedroom, similar to a hotel type atmosphere so to accommodate patients undergoing an overnight stay. All patient observation rooms were designed as single occupancy bedrooms and included king size beds, flat screen televisions with VCR/VHS players and private bathrooms with walk in showers. The facility was ready to treat patients just one day after construction was completed. End users have been pleased with the facility which has been well received by their patients.
