Natural wonders under the sea The Central Coast offers an incredible opportunity to observe a wide array of sea creatures in their natural habitat, whether you’re on the sand, swimming, snorkelling, or simply rock-pooling with the kids on a sunny arvo. With a bit of luck and a keen eye, you’ll discover just how rich and varied our local marine life really is. Marine environments are delicate and require our respect. When exploring the beach, rock pools, or underwater, remember to observe creatures without disturbing them, leave shells where you find them, and always dispose of rubbish responsibly

The Importance of Relaxation Why Taking Time to Unwind Really Matters
I n our fast-paced world, where the daily grind can often feel relentless, the importance of relaxation is sometimes overlooked. However, taking time to relax is not just a luxury—it’s a necessity for maintaining both physical and mental wellbeing. Relaxation isn’t just about having a break—it’s about recharging your batteries so you can face each day with energy, focus, and a positive outlook. Whether you’re taking a moment to enjoy the sunshine, having a chat with a mate, or simply putting your feet up, making time to relax is one of the best investments you can
mind is clearer and your concentration improves. This means you can tackle tasks more efficiently and creatively, whether you’re at work, studying, or managing household chores. Stress and tension are common culprits behind poor sleep. Relaxation techniques such as reading, listening to music, or having a warm bath before bed can signal to your body that it’s time to wind down. This helps you fall asleep more easily and get better quality rest, which is essential for overall health.
make in your health and happiness. Relaxation helps lower stress levels, which in turn reduces the risk of a host of health issues such as high blood pressure, heart disease, and headaches. When you allow your body to unwind, your muscles loosen up, your breathing slows, and your heart rate returns to normal. This can improve your immune function, making you less susceptible to illnesses like the common cold or flu. It may seem counter-intuitive, but taking breaks and relaxing can make you more productive. When you’re well-rested, your

N ot only do awnings provide much-needed shade, but they also enhance the look and feel of your outdoor spaces, making them perfect for relaxing with family, entertaining or simply enjoying a quiet arvo outside. Why Choose Awnings? • Protection from the Elements: Awnings shield outdoor areas from harsh sunlight, harmful UV rays, and even unexpected summer showers. • Energy Efficiency: By shading windows and doors, awnings can help reduce indoor temperatures, meaning less reliance on air conditioning and lower energy bills. • Versatile Design: With a wide range of colours, fabrics, and styles available, awnings can be tailored to suit any architectural style. • Increased Usable Space: Transform patios, balconies, and decks into usable spaces all summer long, no matter how scorching it gets outside. Types of Awnings 1. Retractable Awnings: Allow you to adjust shade, extending them for sun protection or retracting for star gazing at night. 2. Fixed Awnings: A popular choice for permanent coverage over windows, doors, or entertaining areas. They’re sturdy and require minimal maintenance. 3. Motorised Awnings: For a touch of luxury, motorised options offer effortless operation at the press of a button—ideal for larger areas or those with mobility concerns. 4. Canopy Awnings: Provide a charming, café-style look and are great for smaller spaces. Choosing the Right Awning When selecting an awning, consider the direction your outdoor area faces, local weather conditions, and your preferred style. For instance, north- and west-facing spaces typically need robust coverage to block the afternoon sun. Opt for high-quality materials that can Create Shade with Attractive Awnings
withstand the Aussie climate, such as UV-resistant fabrics and rust proof frames. Colour is another important factor. Lighter shades reflect heat, while darker tones may absorb it. Choose colours and patterns that complement your home’s exterior for a cohesive look. Installation and Maintenance Tips • Engage a reputable local installer to ensure your awning is securely fitted and complies with council regulations. • Regularly clean the fabric and frame with mild soap and water to prevent dirt build-up and prolong the life of your awning. • Retract awnings during high winds or storms to prevent damage. • Check moving parts and hardware periodically for wear and tear.

Lifejacket Servicing and Care
L ifejackets are exposed to heat, sun and salt, which means they can be easily subject to damage. Look after your lifejackets by rinsing off salt with fresh water, checking for damage after use, storing lifejackets in a dry, well-ventilated area out of sunlight, not using your lifejackets as cushions or fenders (bumpers), keeping lifejackets away from oil and fuel, removing new lifejackets from their plastic wrapping before storing. Inflatable lifejackets need extra care. An inflatable lifejacket can only save your life if it's in good working order. If it's not, you or one of your passengers could drown. Check your lifejacket before each use and service it regularly. A pre-wear check takes a minute or two. Step 1: Check there are no visible signs of wear and tear. Step 2: Check that the CO2 cylinder is not pierced and is screwed in firmly (hand tight). Step 3: If you have an auto-inflating lifejacket, check the auto-inflation cartridge is hand tight and that it's still in date. Cartridges must be replaced by the expiry date shown. Step 4: Finally, check the pull cord is free and ready to use. After use, remove the cartridge and rinse the lifejacket with fresh water. Dry the lifejacket and reconnect the cartridge before storing. In NSW, you must service inflatable lifejackets once a year, or in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. If you cannot remember when your lifejacket was last serviced, get it serviced straight away. Keep receipts and certificates as evidence of servicing. Keep a record of the date your lifejacket was serviced on the inside of your lifejacket. Find your nearest lifejacket service location and set yourself automated servicing reminders. Sometimes, you can self-service a lifejacket by following the manufacturer's instructions. The instructions are either supplied with a new lifejacket, printed on the lifejacket itself, or available on the manufacturer's website. Lifejacket servicing info can be found in the Boating Handbook https://www.rms.nsw.gov.au/documents/maritime/licence/boating-handbook.pdf

Strain: Discard the ice from your glass and strain the mixture in to keep it crisp and clear. 4. Top with soda: Pour gently to preserve the bubbles and maintain translucency. 5. Garnish: Add a lemon twist or float an edible flower for a touch of sanctuary charm.

What is the best flooring - Laminate, Bamboo or Timber?
E ach has advantages and your choice will depend on what you are looking to achieve. For some a quick revamp prior to selling; for some durability to survive beach sand, children and pets; for others a stylish finish to their new home. Choosing the right flooring may require a discussion with an experienced professional and a visit to a good showroom. Putting samples down in your home is also valuable to ensure it looks good 'on-site'. So, what are the qualities of each option? Laminate flooring is made of the same material as kitchen bench tops, but is substantially harder, making it extremely resistant to scratching. This is the most cost effective and options range from budget 7mm boards to 12mm realistic Aussie Colours. You cannot re-sand a laminate floor and in 20-25 years’ time you will lift and replace it. Strand woven bamboo is created by compressing bamboo fibers under high pressure to form the hardest of any flooring in Australia. Pre-finished with 6 layers of ceramic varnish gives a highly durable surface, resistant to household and commercial traffic. Available in semi gloss or matt finish, it comes in 20+ different colours. Bamboo is considered an environmentally sound choice and is highly sustainable. It is generally cheaper than engineered timber options but avoid thin boards (less than 14mm) from one off suppliers. Mostly made in China, quality is not consistent across providers. Engineered timber has a 'dress' layer of
timber that allows the floor to be sanded back several times. The product is extremely dimensionally stable (doesn't warp or twist), can be laid immediately and is easy to keep clean. Like bamboo, engineered timber comes pre finished and ready to walk on. Impact resistance depends on the species of wood. Being a natural material there is usually a wider range of features and colour ranges in floorboards, so don't rely on a single small sample to give you the full picture. Choices include Australian managed forest hardwood species such as Blackbutt and Spotted Gum etc, as well as plantation sourced species like Kempas and Merbeau. In any species you have a choice of length and width of the timber strips and the cost falls between 1 strip (longer wider boards), 2 strip and 3 strip (shorter narrower boards). It is a more cost-effective option than solid timber with more advantages. At Proflooring Umina We specialise in quality Oak, Timber &

THE EXPERT ask by multiple professionals “you won’t die of prostate cancer – you’ll die with it”. This is not comforting to hear, and it certainly doesn’t line up with what I’ve seen with many others who are now gone. They were not all elderly by any means (the youngest just 52) but still suffered heaps as things grew increasingly worse. I find it frightening that even though they complied with the conventional advice, in every case apart from one they lost their prostate anyway and with terrible consequences. Most of the ones that didn’t pass away eventually wished they had, due to the ensuing fallout after their removal & side-effects of the procedures. I’ve heard you have been helping many without charge for 30years to enjoy their best lives. I’m very keen to pursue the same path and to be guided in the principles of natural living. Evidently when you were invited to speak at a local Prostate Cancer Support Group, you had an extremely positive effect on all the patients there. I’m hoping you will be able to advise me concerning my diet & lifestyle and whatever else I need to do. Now to my wife & daughter (she is only 34). They’ve also not long received confirmation that they both have developed breast cancer, just as an alarming number of their friends have too. FYI, just as my father never suffered with any cancer or even enlargement of his prostate as I’m aware, my wife’s parents as far as we know also remained cancer free their whole lives. It seems these days if you live long enough, there’s a huge chance you, your loved ones or friends will get some type of cancer! We do remain grateful for all things and are determined not to become embittered to keep moving forward day by day. Again, I sincerely hope you can assist my wife & daughter in helping them to make the best choices for their lives. Thanks in advance and for your continuing work among those in dire need. A: So sorry to hear you’re experiencing a triple calamity, as cancer knocks on 3 of your family doors at once. As I often say, we either get bitter or better in this short life, with the reality becoming more evident the longer we live. Nevertheless, thank God you have not gone down the bitterness road to despair. Choosing to believe that while there’s life there’s hope is truly the only way to go. Your attitude of gratitude is great & will uphold you all as you keep looking up. Of course, common sense dictates that it’s wise
BY GEOFF GARLINGE
The shocking truth about “THE FORGOTTEN CANCER”
T he following scenario is sadly all too commonplace and constitutes a failure of epic proportions to save thousands of lives via exercising genuine duty of care especially relating to early detection measures. According to the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia (PCFA), collectively nearly half a billion dollars is spent on pre-emptive action for breast, cervical & bowel cancer screening. While not at all downplaying the publicising of associated risks of those or the new $263m lung cancer screening program backed by a nationwide ad campaign, it’s tragic that zero (yes nothing) is allocated to affirmative action in preventing and detecting prostate cancer. Astoundingly, for every death (approx. 400 this year) a mere pittance of $3243 is invested on research for prostate, compared to $9660 on breast cancer. It’s hard to believe, yet true that over 1.3million men have been diagnosed since records began being kept in the 1980s! When I first became involved then in educating men to care for themselves & specifically their prostate… the typical response was “what’s a prostate?” or “that’s secret men’s business”. As with breast cancer, which was also once a taboo subject, increased public awareness has thankfully now removed perceived stigmas and brought about positive change, to where open discussion is basically the norm today. Another shocking revelation is that prostate cancer is no longer an old man’s disease, with an increase of 500% in those being diagnosed between 30-39 over the past 2 decades – and even more appalling, the death rate increasing by 200%. As always, prevention is better than cure and it’s a fact that many lives could have been saved via a simple blood test. With approximately 80 men being diagnosed with prostate cancer each day and of those around 11 consequently dying from the disease, it’s a given that logically men should be checked at least by 40, even in the absence of any knowledge concerning genetic predisposition. Again, as with breast cancer as well as ovarian, where the risk of development is majorly increased…for the sons & brothers of prostate cancer sufferers, the probability of being diagnosed as cancer positive is at least doubled. Q: I’ve recently been diagnosed with prostate cancer, as have numbers of my friends & family members over the past few years and I’m now being told
to make good health choices. I’ll now address your points in the order you stated them… Regarding Prostate cancer, my experience goes back to the 80s & more so into the 90s when supporting Ron Gellatley N.D. author of the best-selling “How to fight Prostate Cancer and Win” book on a personal level, who had a PSA of 127. By far the best 2 chapters he wrote were on Lactoferrin & BTC. Ron did a fine job of articulating Lactoferrin’s intrinsic ability to initiate the body’s cellular immune response as our frontline defence mechanism against infection & disease, as well as being unique in nature including regulating iron. The chapter on BTC was titled “This could be the atomic bomb of cancer therapies” was where he mentions finding the Australian Manufacturer referring to myself, which led to him taking the bio-available liquid form we developed back in 1994. He really should have stated there is no guaranteed “magic silver bullet” to fight cancer. Nutraceuticals are great, though supplementation & dietary intake are crucial. There’s much more required in facilitating the implementation of a lifestyle shift. Hence the necessity for an extensive questionnaire, followed by a 2-5hr min. N/C consult to educate and subsequently devise a specific lifestyle strategy and will certainly be pleased to offer you this service at a mutually convenient time. Regarding your wife & daughter, it is best to see them together & happy to do so. Again, I have had extensive experience with many breast cases over the past 30years and still relate to many well into their 80 & 90s. People often mistakenly assume I became involved in 2001 when my wife was diagnosed with aggressive breast cancer, though it was many years before. Nevertheless, she was given a resolute guarantee by a renown oncology surgeon within a 2year life expectancy if she didn’t do chemotherapy, radiation and tamoxifen. Like anyone else, I would have supported whatever choices she made. Thank God, 24years later she’s still cancer free and all her diagnostics are fine Many breast cancer cases I support decide to do mainstream therapies and my response is always the same – it’s your body, your choice, your cancer, I respect your volition… and so will support you in whatever you decide.

G osford-based accounting firm Tax Stuff has once again teamed up with SoCares to champion animal welfare on the Central Coast. This time making an even bigger impact! For every tax return filed between July and August 2025, Tax Stuff pledged $20 to SoCares. Thanks to overwhelming client support, the initiative raised a remarkable $9,040.00, more than double last year’s donation. These funds will go directly towards food, shelter, and medical care for stray cats and dogs cared for by SoCares’ Charmhaven and Erina facilities. “This cause means the world to us,” said Brad Anthonisz, owner and director of Tax Stuff. “Last year we were thrilled to donate just over $4,000, but this year our community helped us more than double that figure. It’s proof that when locals come together, we can create real change in the community”. Brad’s passion for SoCares stems from personal $9,040 Donation to SoCares Animal Rescue from Tax Stuff
Leave dogs at home not in the car in summer D uring the summer months, this heartbreaking situation is all too common as dog owners often underestimate just how quickly temper atures can rise within a car and inadvertently put their pets in danger while running a “quick” errand. “Cars heat up very rapidly in hot — or even warm — weather,” the RSPCA said in a press release. “Air conditioning can disguise the danger that a dog will face once the engine is turned off.” Shade alone can't keep the heat out, and cracking a window isn't enough to cool down a car, even when it seems like a comfortable temperature outside. What’s more, dogs don’t sweat like humans do. “Unlike humans, dogs pant to help keep themselves cool,” the RSPCA said. “The effectiveness of panting is reduced at high temperatures and humidities.” Last summer the animal welfare charity received over 625 calls — about two calls an hour — regarding animals in hot environ ments, most of which were dogs left in cars and many times the animals do not survive. Heat can pose an even graver risk for senior and very young animals, dogs with heavy coats, dogs suffering from obesity or with underlying health issues, and flat-faced dogs. Please leave your dog at home in the shade where it is lovely and cool with lots of cool, fresh water to drink throughout summer.
experience. In 2022, he adopted Charlie, a playful Staffy x Ridgeback, from the Erina shelter. Charlie has since become both Brad’s best mate and the unofficial office mascot of Tax Stuff. Brad added “Supporting SoCares is my way of saying thank you, and encouraging others to adopt, foster, or donate. The team at SoCares does incredible work, and we’re proud to stand by them again this year”. SoCares (Society of Companion Animal Rescuers) is the only organization managing council-operated animal shelters on the Central Coast. Since 2014, they have been leading the way in pound reform and have successfully rehomed thousands of animals. This year’s campaign is part of Tax Stuff’s ongoing commitment to giving back to the community, not only through quality accounting services but also through partnerships with local organisations like SoCares and The Entrance Hockey Club. Strong Bones, Strong Future: Why Osteoporosis Deserves Your Attention O steoporosis — it sounds like something that happens only to your nan after not getting enough sunlight, right? Not so. Right here in Australia, this “silent” condition is quietly eroding the health of hundreds of thousands of people, and not just the elderly. According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, around 853,600 Australians aged 50 and over are living with diagnosed osteoporosis or osteopenia (low bone density). That’s roughly one in four older Australians, and many more remain undiagnosed until something breaks, literally. That number increases to 2 in 3 Australians over the age of 60. By 2033, Healthy Bones Australia projects that 7.7 million people aged 50+ will have osteoporosis or osteopenia. It’s an alarming trajectory that signals a growing public health crisis, particularly for women after menopause and older men who often assume they’re not at risk. The real danger isn’t the bone loss itself; it’s the fractures that follow. A simple fall from standing height can shatter a hip, wrist or spine, setting off a devastating chain of events. Hip fractures are especially serious. The Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care (ACSQHC) reports that people who sustain a hip fracture are over 3.5 times more likely to die within 12 months than those who haven’t been injured. For many, the injury triggers a loss of independence, confidence
and mobility that can be difficult, if not impossible, to recover from. So, what’s going on here? Bone loss is a normal part of ageing, but lifestyle and hormonal changes can accelerate it. After menopause, women’s oestrogen levels drop sharply, speeding up bone breakdown. Men experience gradual bone loss too, though often later in life. Add in sedentary habits, poor nutrition, low vitamin D, smoking, various cancer treatments, or long-term steroid use, and your bone density can plummet before you even notice. Osteoporosis is typically considered manageable rather than fully reversible, but in some cases, significant improvement and partial reversal of bone loss can occur with proper treatment and lifestyle changes That’s where The Bone Lab at Conveniently Active comes in. This specialised bone health program, designed by Accredited Exercise Physiologists, focuses on evidence-based prevention and rehabilitation for osteoporosis and osteopenia. The Bone Lab’s approach includes progressive strength training, balance and fall-prevention exercises, education on bone-supportive nutrition, and a one-on-one assessment to understand your individuals’ challenges and goals. It’s not just about protecting your bones; it’s about protecting your lifestyle. Whether you’re a 50-year-old rediscovering fitness, a retiree wanting to stay independent, or someone managing chronic pain or post-menopausal changes, investing in your bone health today can mean freedom, confidence and movement for years to come. Because at the end of the day, strong bones
don’t just help you stand taller — they help you live longer. And that’s a message worth standing up for.

Understanding Hydration and the Benefits of Watermelon in Your Diet
S taying hydrated is essential for maintaining good health and ensuring the body functions properly. Water makes up around 60% of the human body and is involved in almost every bodily process, including regulating body temperature, transporting nutrients, removing waste, and lubricating joints. Even mild dehydration can lead to headaches, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, and decreased physical performance. In the long term, chronic dehydration may contribute to kidney stones, urinary tract infections, and other health issues. Hydration is particularly important in the Australian climate, where hot weather and high levels of physical activity can lead to increased fluid loss through sweat. It's recommended that adults aim for about 2 to 2.5 litres of fluids per day, although individual needs can vary depending on age, activity level, and environmental factors. How Watermelon Helps with Hydration One enjoyable and tasty way to support hydration is by including water-rich foods in your diet. Watermelon is an excellent example. Composed of about 92% water, watermelon is not only refreshing but also helps boost fluid
intake, especially during hot summer days or after physical activity. In addition to its high-water content, watermelon provides important nutrients such as vitamin C, vitamin A, potassium, and antioxidants like lycopene. These nutrients contribute to overall health and can help replenish electrolytes lost through sweat. Because of its natural sweetness and juiciness, watermelon is a popular snack for both kids and adults, making it an easy choice for staying hydrated. Practical Tips for Staying Hydrated • Drink water regularly throughout the day, even if you’re not feeling thirsty. • Eat water-rich fruits and vegetables such as watermelon, cucumber, oranges, and strawberries. • Carry a reusable water bottle with you to remind yourself to drink. • Limit caffeine and alcohol, as they can increase fluid loss. • Listen to your body—dry lips, dark urine, and headaches can be signs you need more fluids. Hydration is vital for your health and wellbeing. Next time you’re feeling parched,
reach for a slice of watermelon—it’s a delicious way to help keep your body hydrated and energised.

Essential Tips for Maintaining an Outdoor Deck
P roper protection is key to keeping maintain your deck, so it lasts for years to come. If you’re building or renovating a deck, use materials designed to withstand conditions. Hardwood timbers like Merbau, Spotted Gum, or Jarrah are popular choices due to their natural durability. Composite decking is also popular, resisting rot, pests, and fading. Keep your deck clean to prevent mould, mildew, and stains. Sweep regularly to remove leaves, dirt, and debris. Wash every few months with mild soap and water, or a deck cleaner. Avoid high-pressure hoses as they damage
Ensure there is sufficient drainage, so water doesn’t pool on the surface. Use guttering and downpipes to direct rainwater away from your deck and house. Check for leaks and blocked drains, especially after a big storm. Use termite-resistant materials or treat your deck with appropriate insecticides. Regularly inspect for signs of pest activity, such as mud trails or hollow-sounding wood. Once every season, look for signs of rot, loose boards, popped nails, or splintering. Tighten any loose screws or nails and sand down rough patches to avoid injuries.
wood fibres. Applying a quality sealant once per year or decking oil is essential for protection against UV rays, rain, and temperature fluctuations. Oil-based finishes penetrate timber and help prevent drying and cracking, water-based sealants provide a protective layer on the surface. Add shade structures: pergolas, umbrellas, or shade sails to reduce sun exposure and keep your deck cooler. Installing clear roofing or awnings can protect against rain without blocking natural light.
