Four Year Starter Senior Middle Blocker Suzanne Le Satz

"A Tradition Begins"

Head Coach Sue Hegerle-Snyder

A NEW ERA BEGINS For the past 15 years, the volleyball program at USO was directed by John Martin. Now the reins of leader– ship have been passed to Sue Hegerle-Snyder. A new tradition of USO volleyball has begun. One era marks its closing ...as another, new era is about to begin. Although inheriting a team which finished just 2-26 (1 · 13 WCC) in 1989, Hegerle-Snyderwill find experienced, quality volleyball players can be found at each position. Hegerle·Snyder feels there is definitely enough talent available to begin the rebu ilding of the USO program. The strength of the 1990 Toreras lies in its three sen ior middle blockers. Angie Rais was an Honorable Men– tion selection in the WCC in 1989. She led the Toreras in kills (246) and solo blocks (60). Four year starter Suzanne Le Satz joins with Rais to form a formidable blocking duo. She registered 140 kills, 123 digs and 40 solo blocks as a junior. Kathleen Hayes will provide depth at both blocking spots with added help expected to come from heralded freshman Nikki Wallace. The position of setter will belong to one of two talented sophomores. Vying for the starter's spot will be Kristi Harris, who registered 462 assists and 156 digs as a freshman, and Shannon Mutch, who recorded 407 assists and a .421 hitting percentage in her first year as a collegian. Hegerle-Snyder would like to begin the '90 season with one of the two assuming the primary set· ter's role. The battle for the three hitting positions will be an intense one in 1990. Hegerle-Snyder looks for sopho– more Maria Rickard to step to the forefront on the right side. Rickard recorded 151 kills and 252 digs as a fresh· man. Lefthanded sophomore Heather Oalley is slated for duty on the left side. Dalley recorded 176 kills and led the team in '89 with 287 digs. Expected to battle for the remaining hitting spot are junior Kellie Logsdon, who recorded 126 digs in '89, and sophomore Andrea Bruns, a 1989 walk-on who racked up 53 kills and 67 digs as a freshman. A pair of freshmen - walk-on Melissa Doell and highly talented Torril Purvis - will push the incumbents for playing time at all three positions. While intent on beginning a new volleyball tradition at USO, Hegerle-Snyder realizes she is inheriting a squad that relished victories only twice in 1989. She knows that the tasks awaiting the Toreras... including a tough early season schedule...are formidable...yet, she wel– comes the challenges. She feels that achieving ten vie· tories and moving up in the WCC standings are reasonable 1990 goals. 1990 marks a series of new beginnings for USO women's volleyball. It is the start of a new attitude and the onset of new traditions. For Sue Hegerle-Snyder and the Toreras, a new era is about to begin.

SUE HEGERLE·SNYDER begins her first year as Head Coach of the University of San Diego women's volleyball program. A 1984 grad– uate of San Diego State Univer– sity (Physical Education) with a Master of Science in Education, Hegerle-Snyder comes to USO from San Diego State, where she

had been an assistant coach since 1986. She brings to USO a national reputation as a top recruiter as well as a ti reless worker and a trainer of top-level athletes. Hegerle-Snyder is well known in competitive volley– ball circles. She competed in volleyball at SDSU for four years (1984 captain) and was an Honorable Mention All-Ame rican selection in 1984. She was a member of the USA National Women's Volleyball Team in 1984 through 1989, she played on USVBA national cham– pionships in 1985, '86 and '89. She was selected as Most Valuable Player at the USVBA national tourna– ment in 1984. A San Diego native, Hegerle-Snyder and her hus– band, Ky, reside in the Mission Bay area of San Diego.
