USD owns a total of nine WCC championships – men's basketball (I 984, 1987), men's tennis ( 1989, 1990), men' s soccer ( 1992, 1995, 1998) and women's vo lleyball (1997 , 1998). The league was chartered by five Bay Area institu– tions (San Francisco, Saint Mary's, Santa Clara, San Jose State and Pacific) as the Californ ia Basketball Association,

When the West Coast Conference first got its start back in 1952, the founders really had onl y one goal in mind ... to create a convenient way for five Bay Area schools to play basketball. What has grown from that original vision some 46 years ago is a marvelously cohesive athletics league which is competitive at the national level in 13 sports. The eight current members of the WCC span the western coast of the United States from Canada to Mexico. Through the institutions range from the pine forests of east– ern Washington state to the sun drenched beaches of south–

playing its fi rst game on Janu– ary 2, 1953. After two seasons of pl ay under that name, the conference expanded to include Loyola M arymount a nd Pepperdine in 1955 , and be– came the "West Coast Athletic Conference" in 1956 . The name was shortened to "West Coast Conference" in 1989. The current alignment of Gonzaga, Loyola Marymount, Pepperd ine, Portl and , Saint Mary's, San Diego, San Fran–

ern California, the combined excellence in athletics and aca– demic s sets the conference apart on the national scene and draws the individual institutions together in a common mission. The WCC sponsors

championships in baseball , men's and women's basketball, men' s and women's cross country, men 's and women's golf, men's and women's soc– cer, men's and women's tennis, women's rowing, and women's volleyball. Women's rowing and golf were new champion– ship sports added for the 1996-97 season. Each year since 1989 the WCC has advanced at least one team to a national championship semifinal. All to– taled, the WCC owns 32 team and individual national cham– pionships with USD's Zuzana Lesenarova's 1999 NCAA singles tenni s title the most recent. Last season the USD volleyball team advanced to the NCAATournament for the fourth tirr.e in six years; the men's soccer team advanced for the sixth time since 1990; and the USD women 's tennis team 1998-99 Final Basketball Standings School wee Overall
