WEINGART LOAN FUND RECEIVES $6 , 000,000 BOOST In August, former USO trustee Joan Kroc and President Alice B. Hayes had a conversation about the institu- tion ' priority needs. The result of that discussion was a $3 million gift from Mrs. Kroc to the Weingart No- Interest Student Loan Fund Trust. Not only was this a significant gift in its own right, but it will be matched dollar-for-dollar by the Weingart Foundation of Los Angeles. As part of a Weingart Foundation program, USO is one of 16 Southern California institutions eligible for matching funds; in USD's case, up to $7.2 mil - lion. To date, USO has raised more than $6.4 million and has until Dec. 3 1, 1996, to complete the challenge. Graduates of California high schools are eligible for interest-free loans from the fund . More than 4,000 USO students have benefited from this program since its inception in 1986. Some $8.5 million has been lent over that period with $1.86 mil - lion repaid and only a little more than $200 in permanent default. Thank you, Mrs. Kroc, fo r your faith in USD's students.

Kathryn Colachis and Douglas Manchester cut the ceremonial ribbon and officially dedicated the university's newest gathering place for students and special events , Colachis Plaza. Between 1986 and 1992, more than 2,200 donors contributed $53 million to the campaign. During the ceremony, the deans addressed the audience and outlined how these gifts have been used to provide $ 16 mil- lion for student financial aid, five endowed chairs, the Hahn University Center, the Pardee Legal Research Center, the Manchester Family Child Development Center and other projects. In addition to the campaign memorial, the James W. and Kathryn S. Colachis Plaza and Patsy and Forrest Shumway Fountain were al o dedicated at the event. Members of the Colachis family attended as did the Shumways and their niece, Elizabeth Shumway '92, '94. Both families made gifts to the campaign for the Marian Way Mall project. The purchase and renovation of the dio- ce e building into the Hughes Administration Center finally made possible the development of this first phase of the mall. Board of Trustees Chair Peter Hughes acknowledged campaign chair Joanne Warren and the mem- bers of her committee whose hard work made the campaign a success. Trustee Douglas Manchester, chair of the faciliti es committee, gave a trib- ute to his predecessor, Jim Colachis, whose dream for the campus was the closing of Marian Way and the cre- ation of a mall running the length of the campus.
