FROM THE EDITOR

W hat I love about December is that I know that if I get organized and intentional, my actions will impact the community long past the holidays. We have power in numbers and no other month makes it this easy to support the arts, museums, and locally-owned stores that make our city so unique. In a world that seems to move faster and faster and begins to look the same, New Orleans fights hard to retain its distinctive personality and beloved traditions. It's something that brings us great pride. So in the spirit of "we're all in this together," I'm simplifying things. If a gift or holiday activity is also a gift to the city, then, check, one gift down and another to go. I'm not really a baking cookies kind of gal, but wine and cheese...yes, from locally owned grocery and wine shops. I'll take my nieces and nephew to the Nutcracker Ballet and we'll carol in the Quarter. Clever gifts from museum shops or subscriptions to their programs will make the cut. And for those who "have everything," I'm making a donation to the Times-Picayune Doll and Toy Fund, an organization that has helped make Christmas happen for over 124 years. That's what I'm talking about. That's why I love December.

W hat was once an annex of the Soule Business College in the Garden District is now a stunning family home that truly shines at the holidays. The two-story brick structure was built in 1923 and originally housed the typing and stenographer departments of the trade school. Pam Dongieux renovated the building to create two stylish and spacious condominiums. She lives in the upstairs space with her three children and her mother lives in the other. It's a beehive of activity and she wouldn't have it any other way. With 14 foot ceilings and expansive windows looking out

over soaring oak trees, she's got the swankiest treehouse ever. "What I love is all of the natural light pouring in," Pam explains. "The windows have no coverings; the trees provide all the shading and privacy we need." The modern loft-like space has a hip industrial vibe and with all the cozy furnishings and accessories that Pam has collected over the years, her home is as relaxed and welcoming as she is. At Christmas, Pam seeks out the largest and most attractive freshly cut tree she can find at Urban Roots. Having once owned her own flower business, she has plenty of experience decorating trees for others. When it comes to her own, she is all about colorful ornaments and the ones her kids made by hand — the more sentimental the better. In her living room, she has the grand piano she grew up with loaded with nutcrackers, brush trees, and family pictures. "I have people over constantly through the holidays—family, friends, my kids' friends, you name it. We're on the piano, we're gathered around the fireplace. Celebrating at home is important to me." With two teenagers in residence,

Dennis and Anita, and another son, Gunner, at Stanford University, you can definitely say it's a full house. Most gatherings include snuggling with four beloved rescued dogs: Sasha and Jersey, her Bernese and Husky mixes, and Charlie and Jack, both of Jack Russell lineage. Several comfortable seating areas allow guests to spread out with a cocktail or bite, and Pam has enchanting decorations throughout the living room. Little green trees, a collection of snowglobes, and an occasional bird seem quite at home. Glittery trees iced with red berries sit atop an antique chest of drawers she found at Wirthmore Antiques, and on another chest there are tall metal trees that hold tealights. With the abundant sunlight streaming in, everything is gleaming and sparkly especially the glamorous mirrored bar that she custom designed. "I knew I wanted a built-in bar as a strong design element," Pam explained. "Gretchen Weller Howard lacquered it chinoiserie red accented with gold trim." The dramatic bar is a showstopper. By adding

It's wonderful to see the old schoolhouse as busy as it was back in the day and the views from the windows are all the more special at this time of year.

Using figurative nutcrackers as holiday decorations dates back to the 19th century when German toymakers carved wooden soldiers that could actually crack the nuts from children's stockings.

For this party, the banquette is swagged with faux garland and trimmed with red berries. The pops of red in the throws and cheerful holiday plates tie the pale green cushions and aqua pillows to the more traditional colors of the season. The mantle is lined with iced brush trees and an array of nutcrackers collected over a lifetime. What I love about this type of entertaining is that nothing has to match and more is truly merrier. "Starter" nutcrackers as gifts for grandchildren can be the beginning of their own collections and favors of ornaments and Christmas crackers are meant to be shared. There's something so classic and nostalgic about Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Ballet; it transcends generations. I can't think of a better way to spend time during the holidays than with the children you love the most.

W hen Jane Scott and Philip Hodges moved back to New Orleans from her home state of Kentucky, it was both a homecoming and the beginning of a new chapter. With both of their children, Nalty and Talley, grown and off at school, it seemed natural to renest in the city where it all began. The couple met while attending Newcomb and Tulane, and New Orleans is where they started their family; so returning

to a place they loved suited them perfectly. After "stalking" real estate for quite some time, as Jane Scott puts it, they kept coming back to a "quirky: as in dark closed-off rooms and a cramped entryway" Greek Revival house in the Garden District. "We had to really think about how we could make it our own," she explains. And so they did. With a careful renovation and an abundance of style, it looks like their next phase is off to a great start.

In the entrance hall, she keeps things light and open by draping the mirror and bannister with fresh garland ordered from Pottery Barn. By adding festive ribbon and magnolia leaves, she "makes it more New Orleans." Sentimental touches such as a collection of Rebecca Vizard Fortuny mini-stockings and ornaments that spell the word "joy" (her beloved mother-in-law's name), make the welcoming first look at the house all the more personal. As Jane Scott says, "It's about tucking in those memories and creating new moments with the things we cherish, that creates true style."

that had been added along the way. "Opening up the room was transformative," Jane Scott explains. "Light suddenly streamed in from all sides." And the choice of a lacquered wall — Hollandlac Brilliant Chartreuse by Fine Paints of Europe — took a "moment of bravery" Jane Scott laughs. "With the crisp white moldings and otherwise neutral décor, the color doesn't overwhelm: it glows." The strong mix of antiques, modern pieces, and vivid colors in art definitely jazzes up this stately living room. Favorite pieces include the square glass coffee table from Uptowner Antiques, a vibrant turquoise painting by Mallory Page, and an organic white ceramic vase by Julie Silvers. Both fireplaces, original to the house, are decorated with an

"This treasured heirloom piece was gifted to me by my grandmother. I simply love that she watches over the revelry that often takes place at our dining room table." The

formality is relaxed with antique benches in their original upholstery, a hand-blocked Indian tablecloth found while traveling, and an artful mix of linens and china. For this party, she layered a traditional china pattern with raspberry chargers and Leontine Linens in a bold design and fun color. "Everything does not have to match. Guests are more relaxed when things are mixed and matched." She often buys incomplete sets of china at junk shops and with every hue imaginable in linens and colorful Chaffe McIlhenny glasses, she is prepared to design endless stylish tablescapes. Whimsical gold bird candlesticks, which were a wedding gift, live happily with sterling silver goblets and monogrammed julep cups, a nod to her Kentucky roots. And sticking peppermint sticks in oranges is something she's done since childhood. With this relaxed and spirited attitude for honoring family traditions while creating new ones, it's easy to see how the Hodges are loving life in New Orleans.
