GRAVES This area lies from the surrounding district to Bordeaux down to a point some 13 miles south of the town and stretches some 5| miles in width, and includes all the districts on the left bank of the River Garonne between Sauternes and Bordeaux the town. The area produces both red and white wines, some very fine wines. The name Graves was first given to the wines of Bordeaux which were grown on the gravelly soil. This was before the classification of 1855, when the area was split up into districts. 175
