SETTING The University of San Di ego is an independent Catholi c institution of higher education. Founded in 1949, USD is located on 180 acres over– looking Mission Bay, San Diego Harbor and the Pacific Ocean. The cam– pus is named A lca la Park and is located just 10 minutes from downtown San Di ego and the wor ld famous Sa n Diego Zoo. Historic Old Town is just minutes away as we ll. The city of San Di ego along w ith this campus traces their origins to fifteenth century Spa in . The campus was named after a Spanish village near Madrid - Alcala de Henares. Founded by the Greeks as Comp lutum, the vill age was later renamed Al Kala (the Castle) by the Mosl ems. Chris– tians recaptured the vi ll age centu ries later and founded a univers ity, the Univers ity of Alca la, whose bu il dings became the insp iration for USD 's style. Both institutions are loca ted on a hill overlooking a river valley.

The USD ca mpus is regarded as one of the most arch itectura lly unique insti– tutions in the country, featuring 18 major buildings des igned in an ornamenta l 16th century Spanish Renaissa nce sty le. Since 1984, USD has comp leted 11 major construction and expansion projects. A five-story, Spanish Renaissance parking ga rage (1,100 spaces) was compl eted in 1998. A landscaped founta in pl aza was finished in the fall of 1995, connecting the entrances of the lmmaculata and Hughes Admin istra ti on Center. In 1992, the univers ity comp leted the 45,000 square foot Loma Hal l, which includes an ex– panded bookstore, a larger mail center, classrooms and laboratories. In 1990, the renovated Katherine M. and George M . Pardee Jr. Legal Resea rch Center opened, a faci lity that offers the latest in information techno logy. ACADE!UICS USD enroll s more than 6,800 students who have a choice of more than 50 undergraduate and graduate degree programs. The univers ity's academi c units include the Col lege of Arts and Sciences, and the Schools of Business Administra– ti on, Edu cation, Law and Nursing. Class size generall y averages between 18-25 students with the student to teacher ratio being 18:1. Over 97 percent of USD 's full -time faculty hold doctorates . In the annual ratings of the country 's co ll eges and universiti es, published by U.S. News & World Report, USD moved from the regional to national category in 1994. The university is ranked among the top 100 schoo ls in the nation .

STUDENT LIFE Student activiti es include cultural events, dances, boat crui ses, beach parti es, BBQ 's, concerts, comedy nights, sympos ia and much more. Students participate in a w ide range of vo lunteer projects such as adu lt literacy tutoring, seni or citizen outreach, and house bui lding in Tijuana. The intramura l program is also an integral part of student life on campu s with over two-thirds of the USD community partak– ing in intramural sports. ATIRETICS The Univers ity of San Diego is a member of the West Coast Confe rence for nea rly all sports and competes in 16 intercoll egiate sports on the NCAA D ivision I leve l. Women 's sports include: basketball , crew, cross country, soccer, softba ll , swim– ming, tennis and volleyba ll. Men 's sports include: baseba ll, basketba ll, crew, cross cou ntry, golf, footba ll, soccer and tenn is. Since 1990 USD teams have won seven conference championships; made 20 post-season appearances; had 19 Conference Coaches of theYea r; 16 Conference Players of the Year, 11 Conference Freshman of the Year, three WCC Scholar Ath letes of the Year and 21 NCAA A ll-Americans. Thi s past yea r, Zuzana Lesenarova, a junior on the women' s tennis team, ea rned her third-stra ight NCAA All-Amer ica n honor and won the schoo l's first ever Division I nationa l championship by w inning the 1999 NCAA Women's Tennis Singles Cham- pionship. Junior Petia Yanchulova also earned First Team All-America Acco lades - the first in USD vo ll eyba ll history. '

DID YOU KNOW • The University of San Diego was selected by the John Templeton Foundation for its 1997-98 Honor Roll of Character-Building Colleges. The honor roll recognizes 135 four year accredited undergraduate institutions that emphasize character building an integral part of the college experience. Foundation officials made special mention of USD's "Ethics Across the Curriculum," a campus-wide initiative funded with a two-year, $138,000 grant from the E.L. Wiegand Foundation. USD is one of eight California colleges and universities named to the honor roll.
