How it Happened... A long, long time ago, in an apartment far, far away….. Pretty corny I guess….

I had just gotten out of the Navy in the very early 70’s, and once I’d go e ground in the civilian world, I found myself in the position of having to do something to actually earn money! I wasn’t all that fond of real work, and thought that if I formed a band, we could just make tons of money, and maybe even be sort of famous… Didn’t take long for reality to set in though! I discovered that making 3 or 4 hundred bucks for a Friday and Saturday nite, and then splitting it between 4 people really wasn’t what you could call “making tons of money”! So, I got a real job. I was driving a fork lift for the John Deere Company in Waterloo Iowa. Fortunately, I worked during the day, so I could keep playing in the band at night. Now, at 5.26 an hour, I was actually making some money! I upgraded my guitar, and after watching some musicians on T.V., I decided that I needed to have a leather guitar strap with my name on it. So after asking around, I took some of my hard earned money, and went to my local leather store, and let some guy sell me 100 dollars worth of stuff that I really didn’t need. He gave me a quart of neat lac, a starter set, a rawhide mallet, some paints, and some omega dark brown dye along with a 10 ounce piece of hard old yellow dirty looking latigo that he said should make a good guitar strap. He didn’t last long with the company… (continued page 53)
