only saw her very briefly, but long enough to realize that she was wearing a smooth white mask in front of her face with large black deer-like eyes and thin lips.

It had to be one of the tree folk.

“Hey, do you fancy going up to the crown?” a tall girl asked him. She was wearing a black and white dress intricately laced with a skull pattern. Her indigo-coloured headband was ornately designed with black and violet feathers, every one of them so long that their ends touched the ground.

“What?” he asked, confused.

“To the crown,” repeated the girl impatiently. “If you join us, then there will be enough of us. We need to hurry though, half of our time is up, but we can’t set off because we lost a damage dealer, and you look like one, so what do you think?”

“Zia, are you blind? He’s a beginner, anyone can see that!”

The voice came from a girl in a dress that was over-the-top with frills. She was standing next to a guy in a long black coat in front of a blackboard with “Get a partner” written on it. The girl called Zia hesitated for a second and inspected Zack more closely. She sighed in disappointment.

“Damn it!” said the girl, annoyed. “I didn’t spot his sandals.”
