The electric utilities providing service to the residents and businesses of Spencer are provided primarily by Spencer Municipal Utilities with some outlying areas of the community served by Iowa Lakes Electric Cooperative and Alliant Energy. Electric generation capacity for the city includes 1) long term hydro contract with Western, 2) ownership in Neal 4 Generating Station, 3) ownership in the Walter Scott Jr generating station, 4) ownership in the Wisdom 2 generation station, and 5) peaking capacity in jet and diesel generation, owned and leased by SMU. The municipal utility is in a joint action agency for generation and transmission services. SMU has ownership in high voltage transmission for delivery of generation. SMU's distribution system is 95% or more underground.
