HISTORICAL PLACES IN SPENCER The National Register of Historic Places has identified four (4) structures or buildings and two (2) districts as having historical significance in the community. Although there are many more historical buildings located in Spencer that may have a local significance, the following six historical places are recognized and listed on the National Register.

Adams-Higgins House – Located at 1215 N. Grand Avenue, the Adams-Higgins historical home was built in 1884. This dwelling was added to the National Register of Historic Places 100 years later in 1984. Originally built by J.Q. Adams, and later renovated by Mr. and Mrs. Higgins this house includes large Neo-classical columns, an iron fence, fish pond, and a third floor. A complete renovation was done in the early 2000s to preserve the house’s integrity and enhance its prominence on Grand Avenue. Clay County Courthouse – Opened in 1901, the courthouse replaced the plain, two-story brick building that was the former courthouse for Clay County. The main entrance of the current courthouse is flanked with four large columns of Portage Entry Red Stone and capped with terra cotta. Above that sits an American Eagle with outstretched wings, and surrounded with a laurel wreath. The courthouse added a clock tower in 1910. Inside, there are display cases of relics that date back to before the time of this building. Little Sioux River Bridge – Built in 1905, Little Sioux River Bridge is located on 210 th Avenue in Spencer, Iowa. This pin connected steel bridge has not changed much since the construction, besides being moved in 1915. This historic structure was added to the National Register in 1998. The Little Sioux River Bridge is noted historically for its use of engineering design and its builder Clinton Bridge & Iron Works. Old Spencer High School and Auditorium – Located at 104 E. 4 th Street is the “Old” Spencer High School and Auditorium. This building was used for educational, recreational, and cultural functions. The historical periods of significance were from 1900-1924 and 1925-1949. Recently this building was renovated and is used today as apartments. North Grand Avenue Residential Historic District Immediately north of the historic downtown district is the

North Grand Avenue Residential Historic District where displays of varying architectural styles are shown. This collection of early 20 th century residences provide an excellent collection of historic housing in Spencer. Most of these buildings range from the late 1800s to early 1900s.
