HEALTHCARE SERVICES Hospitals, healthcare facilities and long term care facilities remain an important aspect of community facilities offered within Spencer; especially given the statistics cited earlier in this plan regarding a continuing aging population in Spencer. The provision of healthcare and long term care facilities in Spencer will prove to be an asset to the city’s residents. Appropriate considerations should be provided in support of needed healthcare and senior care facilities in the future.

Spencer Hospital Main Entrance

Spencer Hospital, located at 1200 1 st Avenue East, is one of the community’s largest employers with more than 550 employees dedicated to providing high quality healthcare in the community. On a typical day the average daily inpatient census is 30

and the average daily outpatient registrations are 95. The hospital’s surgery center offers high- definition surgical capabilities for less invasive procedures to help you heal and recover quickly. Abben Cancer Center

Adjoining the Spencer Hospital is the Abben Cancer Center. Named for Ben and Tena Abben, longtime friends and supporters of local healthcare, the Abben Cancer Center was constructed in 1996 through generous support of many volunteers, the Spencer Regional Healthcare Foundation, Spencer Municipal Utilities and the hospital. Today, this cancer center has a team of compassionate and caring healthcare specialists providing complete cancer treatment and care including radiation therapy, medical oncology (chemotherapy), Brachytherapy (seed implants), nutrition counseling, education and support services. The staff at Abben Cancer Center also works closely with the American Cancer Society to provide a variety of support services.
