Steel services investment CMT Steel Services, part of the Barrett Steel Group, has invested more than £2mn in state-of-the-art processing facilities at its Cradley Heath site in the UK. CMT, whose customers are mainly in the structural fabrication and construction markets, has installed two fully automated saw and drill lines and one punch and shear machine. The investment is designed to complement the existing shotblast and primer paint facility.

Lasertube and Barrett Offshore brands. We will also focus on project supply of general steels for large structural fabricators through our Barrett Constructional Steel business.” Mr Corrie and sales executive Alan Petrie, who currently organise deliveries three times a week throughout Scotland, have been involved in the steel industry for a number of years and are familiar figures with Scottish customers. Mr Corrie continued, “Our strength lies in knowledge of the market in Scotland and a ‘local’ presence within the community, backed by the UK’s largest independent steel stockholder. The result is a wide product range with access to additional materials through the supply chain network.” Barrett Steel consists of 42 companies operating from 28 locations across the UK, and is divided into four divisions: general steels, engineering steels, tubes, and international. Recent expansion has seen a stockholding and processing facility being opened in Houston, Texas.

We have the capability to deliver to any UK location, supplying a wide variety of products, from a few bars cut to size, up to large structural components. Services include saw cutting, drilling, punching, shearing, shot blasting and primer painting, profiling and laser cutting of both tubular and flat products.” Barrett Steel Ltd has committed to developing the market in Scotland with the opening of a new sales office in Bathgate, West Lothian. The new office will promote both the general steels and the tubes divisions of Barrett Steel and will complement the existing service centres in Scotland, which are dedicated to engineering steels. Tony Corrie, business development manager, explained how the Bathgate office will act as a springboard for development: “One of the aims of the new office is to repeat Barrett’s successes south of the border and in Ireland. We recognise the huge potential in Scotland, particularly for our tubes division through our Precision Tubes,

While many companies are restricting spending, Barrett Steel is continuing to invest. Chris Smith, sales manager at CMT Steel Services, says the policy is proving successful: “We have experienced a 20 per cent increase in demand, despite the downturn in the economy in general and the construction market in particular, enabling the company to create an additional 20 jobs. “CMT has the backing of the Barrett Group’s resources, buying power and expertise, as well as its wide stock range.
