USD RECORD EIGHT TOREROS SIGN PRO DEALS FOLLOWING THE 2004 SEASON • 5 San Diego Players Drafted By MLB Eight San Diego players from USD's 35-21 team in 2004 went on to play professional baseball with five being selected in the 2004 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, both new school records . Topping the list of San Diego players chosen by MLB clubs was junior third baseman Freddy Sandoval (Tijuana, Mexico; Marian Catholic HS). Sandoval was taken in the eighth round, 233rd overall, by the Anaheim Angels. Sandoval (6'1", 200 lbs} drove in a league-high 59 RBI and hit nine homeruns in '04. Senior OF Josh Hansen (Irvine, CA; Mater Dei HS), who twice earned AII-WCC honors during his two-year stay at USO , was taken by the Chi– cago White Sox. Just two picks separated Hansen and teammate RHP Aaron Wilson (Lakeside, CA; Santana HS), who was taken by Philadelphia 722nd overall. Wilson (6'3", 190 lbs} hurled a complete game six-hitter to allow San Diego to clinch the 2003 WCC Championship Series. Wilson finished his senior season ranked 14th in the nation with 11 wins. Senior RHP Kyle Collins (San Jose, CA; San Jose CC), who went 7-1 in '04, heard his name called by the Cleveland Indians in the 32nd round. After an All-American junior college career, Collins (6'1", 165 lbs) was 16-6 with a 3.69 ERA in two seasons at USO. Senior Tom Caple (San Diego, CA; Rancho Bernardo HS) was drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the later roundsfor the second straight year. Caple (6'0", 185) became the first player in San Diego school history to be named a First Team AII-WCC player three times. San Diego shortstop Jose Ortega and senior right-handed releiver's Brian Jones and Pat Lucy were each acquired as free agents.
