MEMORANDUM

Date:

January 31, 2019

To:

AOAC INTERNATIONAL Official Methods Board

From:

Deborah McKenzie, Staff Liaison – AOAC Official Methods Board

Subject:

Changes in Structure of AOAC Stakeholder Panels and Working Groups

One of the action items on the 2018 business plan supported by the AOAC Board of Directors was  “Stakeholder Panel Redesign.”   This redesign, spearheaded by the Executive Office examined the  pros and cons of the process, sought input from stakeholder panel chairs, and working group  sponsors.    Questions to be addressed were the following:  1. Can a program be developed for panels that don’t need standards developed?  2. How to get more funded work?  3. How can the current model be adjusted for sustainability?  The Answers:  1. AOAC has a host of products and services; therefore, standards development and SMPRs are  not the only deliverables that can be offered.   Hence, the type of funded consensus work is  expanded.  2. In the event of standards in development, stakeholder panels can be assembled to review  and approve standards, but otherwise focus becomes more working group specific.   Moreover, there are other ways of achieving due process, balance, and consensus for any  standard being developed.  3. Scopes of work can be agreed upon with sponsors to support deliverable development on a  periodic basis.  When funding support becomes unavailable, work areas may become  dormant.
