GFTU BGCM Minutes 2017

THE PRESIDENT: Do you remember we had a discussion this morning about what

do we exactly mean by “young worker”? The Executive Committee discussed

that at lunchtime and John is going to give a report on where we have got to on

that.

THE VICE PRESIDENT: Let me just say to follow on from what Doug said, yes,

Equity, Musicians Union and BECTU have got collective agreements with the

RSC, it is a unionised theatre and the music tonight is by Laura Mvula, as

some of you might know, so it will be quite a modern sort of production and I

am looking forward to it and they still do employ fulltime artists on fulltime

contracts.

We debated this with the Executive Committee. It is now authorised to go

ahead. The definition of “young member” obviously, as we learnt this morning,

differs from union to union. We are going to put a kind of default at 30, but if

the union has a policy or a rule or a tradition that it is 35 or it is something else,

it is up to that union. Everybody knows what we mean. Somebody said we

were talking about youth. We are not, we are talking about young workers.

That is a kind of broader definition, isn’t it? So I think the plan is that Doug is

going to send out the call for nominations quite soon, next week, and will want nominations back by 30 th June. Just for EC members, we said the meeting was in June. It is not. July 19 th is the EC meeting and hopefully we will get the

new members to that EC meeting. So that is underway now. Thanks for that

and thanks to the EC for authorising that.

THE PRESIDENT: Doug, I think we need formally to read into the record who has

been elected to the GFTU EC for the next two year period.
