Drain Center and Emico dig deep in Green Park

spec system to the time scale and spec specified by our client.”

Work has been completed on a unique project in Green Park, one of London’s eight Royal Parks, that involved dropping pipe to pumps 80m below ground in order to create an efficient cooling system. Drainage and utilities products provider Drain Center, in conjunction with M&E sub-contractor Emico and specialist equipment provider MCA Hire, worked to drop high density polyethylene pipe at four sites across the park, which will be used to convey water for an environmentally friendly and cost effective cooling system. The cooling system works when cold water from the ground passes over a heat exchange unit; latent heat is then collected from the water and returned to the boreholes from the station. Work was carried out to strict schedules in order not to disrupt the Changing of the Guard ceremony or watching crowds. Due to the nature of the site and for safety reasons, the Royal Parks limited the size of lorry that could make deliveries to the site and had specified delivery times. This meant that shorter lengths of pipe were required on-site, and specialist machinery supplied by MCA Hire was brought in to cut 372 lengths of pipe in half, with each of the shortened 744 lengths measuring 6m. MCA Hire also supplied an electrofusion machine, along with scrapers and other tooling. To ensure there was no leakage, every electrofusion weld was tested, and the team worked to strict deadlines to complete the work in time for The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations. Simon Gentry, project manager for Emico, said, “We were very mindful of the unique location of the works and knew that we would have to work around the client’s requirements, which specifically included that the project was finished in time for the Diamond Jubilee – there was no room for error. Emico always takes responsibility for the system that it installs and this project was important to us because we were involved in the design process and then worked to deliver a quality, high

Terry Sloman, sales support manager for Drain Center, added, “This was an unusual project for Drain Center because it involved cutting and then feeding pipe down to a great depth in such close proximity to Buckingham Palace. We had to be really flexible with our deliveries and the team worked really hard to get the project finished on time. It’s a great privilege to be able to say that we carried out work in a Royal Park!” Drain Center has over 80 branches across the UK, stocking a wide variety of products for both above- and below-ground applications and the utilities industry.
