Chart Vinyl

STACK ROVING REPORTER

Y ou may have noticed that on JB’s weekly vinyl chart – amongst the new releases and stalwart classics – the 40th anniversary edition of Jeff Wayne’s The War Of The Worlds has climbed into the fray; for Jules Larwood, it’s an utter classic. “My God, I grew up with that particular album,” the Media Advisor at JB Marion (SA) says. “It scarred me – in a good way. An absolutely fantastic album. Obviously, don’t let the movie remake put you off.” The War Of The Worlds is one of several film soundtracks popular on vinyl at Larwood's store. “A lot of people see nostalgia in soundtracks; we have a lot of the older stuff as well,” he explains. “Childhood movies like The Goonies , Beverley Hills Cop … cheesy ‘80s stuff! Which usually had pretty cool soundtracks.” Larwood has been building his own record collection for 15 years. “I’ve got close to 300, and growing,” he says. “The resurgence [of vinyl] for me is a great thing.” His most guarded

He’s in good company with the denizens of Marion, then, a great number of whom would count themselves as metalheads too. “[They’re] very loyal fans,” Larwood says, “so they’re always going to want stuff on vinyl.” Especially if they happen to have seen someone on tour: “You’ll definitely get some 'heads in the following day; sometimes it might be the support band… a local band . Touring does work that way: it’s good exposure, and experience.”

LPs are by American heavy metal outfit Danzig – led by Glenn Danzig, formerly of The Misfits – which he picked up 12 years ago at a fruit ‘n’ veg store. “They’re probably two of my most prized possessions,” he admits, before explaining his metalhead roots. “Old Metallica, and Motörhead – I’ve seen Metallica five times, but the first time I saw them was probably the best: on the Injustice For All tour when I was a teenager. That was fantastic – a real life-changer.”
