Despite a wet June, it certainly did not dampen our fun here at 22SLN. We started the month celebrating 'Eid Al Fitr' to mark the end of Ramadan, the children took part in lots of activities such as creating their own Henna patterns, exploring coloured rice and feasting on Biriyani! Next, was our Fathers Day picnic, the children were delighted to spend time with their loved ones and share their favourite activities. A big thank you to those that came along, we hope that you enjoyed it as much as the children! We ended the month by taking part in the 'Giant Wiggle' to celebrate 'The Very Hungry Caterpillars' 50th birthday, thank you for your donations! With warmer days ahead, we have lots planned throughout July including our Swans Graduation and a 'Beach Party' week! From July 2019, we will be changing the monthly staff awards to quarterly. We want to celebrate and reward our incredible team who strive to deliver outstanding practice each and every day. Employee Recognition Award: It’s time to vote!

We will therefore introduce an 'Employee Recognition Award' to recognise, praise and reward a standout member of staff for their hard work. We will continue to share the following link on each newsletter in order to prompt you to cast your vote, and the page will always be live on our website. Both parents and staff will have the opportunity to vote for their vote for who they believe is the number one employee of the quarter. Please use July as the starting point to cast your vote for the team member who you think should be recognised for their hard work, dedication and going above and beyond for your children. Needless to say, we value your opinion and need your help to choose for the staff member which you feel deserves the award: https://www.22streetlanenursery.co.uk/employee-recognition-award-vote/

The children had such a lovely time on their leavers trip at Harewood House, they visited the bird garden, penguins and spent time in the Curiosity workshop. The children enjoyed a picnic lunch before playing on the playground, however the best part of the trip was definitely travelling by coach!

Introducing Makaton

As part of our team training day, we learned the basic signs of Makaton and how these can support the children in our setting. What is Makaton? Makaton is a language programme using signs and symbols to help people to communicate. It is designed to support spoken language and the signs and symbols are used with speech, in spoken word order. Who is Makaton for? Makaton is the UK's leading language programme for adults and children with learning or communication difficulties. It is also used by everyone who shares their lives, for example, parents and other family members, friends and carers, and education and health professionals. Makaton is used for teaching communication, language and literacy skills with children and adults who are at an early stage of communication and language development. This structured approach can also help people who are learning English as an additional language, helping them to communicate straightaway, while also supporting their learning. We will be teaching Makaton to the children at nursery and would like to share a sign with you every month!

Ducklings Room News

The Ducklings have enjoyed a walk in the park to feed the ducklings, they went in the pram with their friends, walking through the gardens of Roundhay park and towards the lake. The Ducklings enjoyed looking at the birds by the lake and feeding them with special food from the lakeside cafe. We also spotted some real ducklings and Cygnets! We have enjoyed taking part in various cookery classes, we have made a banana, apple, and pear smoothie with soya milk. We encouraged the children to use their fine motor skills to carefully chop up the fruit with a knife and pour the milk into the blender. They watched Chloe blend the fruit together. The Ducklings have also enjoyed the different sensory activities that we have offered to them, the activities have had varied from sand play, a large scale painting activity and shaving foam play. The children enjoyed exploring the foam cream in their hands and clapping them together! To celebrate The Very Hungry Caterpillars birthday, we have been reading the story and we set up a Hungry Caterpillar tasting session for the children, we read the story at the table and each time the Caterpillar munched on some delicious fruit so did we! The children took turns to taste the different fruits, we had banana, apple, pear and orange. We explored what the different fruits felt like and tasted like just like the very hungry caterpillar! When we got to the end of the story, we saw that the caterpillar turned into a beautiful butterfly and all the children took turns to hold the butterfly and look at the different colours on his wings, the children then made a craft butterfly using different colours of materials.

The Swans have been very busy throughout June and have celebrated a number of exciting times. The Swans have been learning all about ‘Saudi Arabia’ which was our country of the month, as we celebrated Eid. The Swans enjoyed looking at the traditional coloured clothing worn for the celebration and learning about what happens during Eid and some of the traditional foods eaten. All the children really enjoyed this outing and showed great understanding of boundaries and enjoyed looking at various animals/birds, exploring the climbing apparatus and learning more about animals living in different habitats and what they like to eat. When some of the children were asked what their favourite part of the day was, they replied, "we loved everything!" We have been placing a huge emphasis on 'school readiness' this month, as many of the Swans are preparing to start school in September. We have been placing more emphasis on phonics looking over all the jolly phonics sounds regularly and beginning to blend and segment simple sounds. We have also continued this learning through lots of sensory trays with different materials such as: pasta, noodles, shaving foam, salt and even coloured sand, challenging the Swans to write their names and other shapes or letters independently. We have been practising for graduation this month and the children can't wait to perform for you at the Graduation Ceremony on the 3rd July. Car Park As you are aware, there are double yellow lines outside the nursery which have been put there for the safety of the children. Please can we ask that parents do not park on them, and also be mindful of parking over more than one space in the car park. As you can appreciate we have very limited parking, and so the car park can become very busy. High Temperatures & Fevers Please can we remind parents that children cannot attend nursery if they have a high temperature (over 38 ° C). If a child develops a temperature whilst at nursery, parents will be called to collect them, as supported by our policies and procedures. We can administer non- prescribed Calpol for a temperature, although we must first receive permission in writing. HMRC Additional Funding Code (3 & 4 year old - 30 hours) If you are eligible and in receipt of additional 3 & 4 year-old funding, look out for a prompt every three months from HMRC to reconfirm your details so that your eligibility can be re-assessed. If you do not do this, please note that we are unable to claim the funding on your behalf. Sun Cream and Sunhats With the warmer months ahead, please can you ensure that your child has appropriate clothing for warm weather including sun cream and a sun hat. We would recommend that you provide sun cream which is factor 50 and at least a 4-star UVA rating. If you could please label your child’s sun cream and hat with their name it would be helpful. Absence Please note that we are unable to swap days or offer an alternative day if your child is absent from nursery. We are now extremely busy and it is impossible for us to do this for all children. This is stated in our terms and conditions. Thank you for your cooperation.

We close at 6:00pm and any parents that pick up after this time will be charged. Thank you for your cooperation. Labels in Clothing To avoid items being lost, please can you ensure that your child’s uniform is clearly labelled including their coats, hats, scarves and wellies. If your child brings gloves to nursery we strongly advise for these to be attached and threaded through their coat to avoid any gloves going missing . Contacting the Nursery Please can we kindly ask parents to try and only call the nursery rooms if necessary. It can be very difficult for the staff to keep coming to the phones when they are trying to look after the children and take appropriate breaks. Please note if ever we have a concern we would always call so please be assured that they are having a good day unless we call you. Thank you for your understanding. Wipes Please note that although we provide nappies as part of our offering, wipes are not included in this. It has been noted that lots of children are coming to nursery without nappy wipes. Moving forwards, we will be charging £15.00 per month to any parents that fails to bring wipes.
