Mars Rover Challenge Third Edition Matthew P. Eckler and Eileen M. Russo, PhD Game, 4–4.5 hours per game You don’t have to leave earth for stellar training. In an increasingly connected world, collaboration no longer suffices as an intermittent, as-needed approach to conquering specific projects in teams. If an organization is to thrive, collaboration must become a constant practice and mindset for employees at all organizational levels. More than a year in the making, the new edition of Mars Rover Challenge (formerly Mars Surface Rover ) is a powerful, hands-on experience that explores the importance of collaboration at both the leadership and workforce levels. The kit offers two experiential games in one: a leadership version contrasting the three most common leadership styles—traditional, passive, and collaborative — and a teamwork version contrasting two common approaches to work — the siloed approach (referred to by Patrick Lencioni as the biggest threat to cross-functional collaboration) and the collaborative approach. Both versions of the game highlight the effects of collaborative efforts on performance outcomes and overall employee motivation as participants are immersed in a construction activity where they are tasked with constructing a prototype Mars Rover for the World Space Agency. Mars Rover Challenge: An Experiential Game for Leadership and Mars Rover Challenge: An Experiential Game for Teamwork each have three primary learning outcomes, but with differing focuses on collaboration. The first outcome is for participants to understand three prevalent leadership styles or approaches to work that are at play in the workplace and how they affect team performance. The second is for them to explore why collaborative teamwork is the best approach for long-term success. Finally, the third outcome is for participants to create an individual plan to lead or work more collaboratively. The kit includes all of the required components to facilitate both games, as well as an initial supply of workbooks for up to 36 participants — 18 for the leader version and 18 for the team version. While each version can function independently, the two versions complement one another and collectively present a more thorough, holistic picture of collaboration and the positive effects it has on workplace productivity. All pieces except for the Participant Workbook are reusable. Refill Participant Workbooks are available for individual purchase, and quantity discounts are available.
