Leader-Manager Profile Second Edition James P. Eicher Assessment and Workshop, 1.5 hours What does it take to be an effective leader and an effective manager? Leadership and management are two different yet complementary skill sets. The problem is, it’s not always clear what distinguishes these competencies — or how they should be applied. The Leader-Manager Profile is different. Unlike many leadership tools that emphasize leadership to the exclusion of management skills, this assessment addresses the necessity of developing skills in both areas and demonstrates how they contribute to success. The Leader-Manager Profile is based on the works of several well-known management experts including Bennis, Kotter, Kouzes, Posner, and others. The model for the assessment exemplifies both leadership and management skills and competencies.

L E A R N I N G O U T C O M E S • Measure competence as a manager and leader • Clarify the differences between leading and managing • Pinpoint the skills needed to be effective in each role • Understand how to balance and improve the two skill sets

Flight From Savo Take Off on a Supervisory Skills Adventure HRDQ Research and Development Team Game, 2 hours

Flight from Savo , a hands-on adventure game, provides supervisors with a fun and interactive way to experience and practice the five key skills addressed in HRDQ’s Supervisory Skills Questionnaire . The journey begins when an airplane carrying a team of scientists crashes on a remote island. To get the team to safety, the supervisor must utilize the key supervisory skills in guiding the construction of an escape plane. The ability to balance the goals of the organization with the needs of the work group is the common thread that runs through five key supervisory skill dimensions. This exciting simulation game demonstrates how a supervisor puts the five key supervisory skills to work. Presented with a predetermined set of toy parts and charged with building an escape plane, each group elects a supervisor who guides the

construction project using the five supervisory skills. A series of “Setbacks” and “Lucky Breaks” both complicates and facilitates the group’s work, and challenges the supervisor. The simulation ends when the reconstructed plane is deemed airworthy. After the models are completed (approximately 60 minutes later), participants take part in a group discussion on the use of the five supervisory skills used during the activity. L E A R N I N G O U T C O M E S • Learn five fundamental supervisory skills • Practice the five skills in a “live” project • Receive direct feedback on skill strengths and weaknesses
