BLOODY MARY / KING COLE BAR THE ST. REGIS NEW YORK, US In 1921, while working at Harry’s New York Bar in Paris, bartender Fernand “Pete” Petiot created a basic version of this classic. After Prohibition in 1934, Petiot arrived at The St. Regis. The name BloodyMary was considered too vulgar, so was renamed Red Snapper. One evening Russian aristocrat Serge Obolensky asked Petiot to spice up his drink – a few Tabasco dashes later

While in colonial Singapore, gentlemen drank gin or whisky, etiquette dictated that ladies could not consume alcohol in public; fruit juices and teas were their preferred beverage. So bartender Ngiam Tong Boon created a cocktail that looked like fruit juice, but was actually infused with gin and other liqueurs. Cherry brandy and Cointreau give the drink a pink hue and feminine flair so was deemed suitable for ladies. raffles.com With its blend of white peach purée and Prosecco, the Bellini was created in 1948 by Giuseppe Cipriani, founder of Harry’s Bar in Venice. Cipriani had a predilection for white peaches and wondered how he could transform them into a drink – he got rave reviews when he added Prosecco to the purée. Eat for charity June marks the third annual Eat (RED) Save Lives, a month-long campaign from charity (RED), founded in 2006 by U2 frontman Bono and Bobby Shriver, that sees some of the culinary world’s most renowned chefs, restaurants and bars raise funds and awareness for the Global Fund to Fight AIDS. Throughout the month there is a range of Eat (RED) Save Lives events, including the second annual (RED) Supper in New York City on June 2, which brings together some of the industry’s most recognizable chefs. Personal chef-hosted (RED) events, local and artisanal food events on the US's East andWest Coasts, plus (RED) partner sponsorships will provide opportunities to support (RED)’s fight for an AIDS-free generation. Drink (RED) Save Lives will see special cocktails in key bars and restaurants in conjunction with Belvedere. Chefs including Mario Batali, Nancy Silverton, TomDouglas and Dominique Ansel are supporting the campaign. red.org
