Alcala Yearbook 1992-1993

Run for your life! USD Toreros prove to be one of the best teams at wee.

unity was the key to our success this year. We were all running 'for the team' and not for our indi– vidual times. It was the first time inmy four years that we have had that kind of unity on our team," commented SeniorMattyYoung. Testing their strengths at the WCC Championships in San Francisco, the team of Cortez, Holmes, Young, Livingston, Ertwine, Gomez, and Clark took third place behind the full schol– arship teams of Portland and Gonzaga. This accomplishment qualified USD's top six runners for the NCAA Regional Champi– onships in Tucson, Arizona, where they placed thirteenth in the region. The USD womens team also enjoyed a great year. The women began by crushing Loyola Marymount and Santa Clara at the first two meets. Jen McCann,

Collen McDonough, Brigita Mohlin, Seil a Clarke, Pepperdine transfer Wendy Werner, and Freshman Chris– tine Labag combined to be very competitive throughout the sea– son. There was individual im– provement at every meet, in– cluding the U.C. Riverside Invi– tational, where seven USD women recorded personal best times. The top six women were joined by Senior Kelli Koenig as they headed to San Francisco for their WCC Championships. Injuries plagued the Toreros last year at the conference meet. Unfortu– nately it was much the same this year, asMcCannand Labagh both had serious foot problems. Runners McCann and Werner went on to the NCAA Regional Meet in Tucson and ran very well.

The Torero Cross Country teams of 1992 enjoyed a verymemorable season and, more importantly, a very successful one. The Torero Men became one of the better teams to have ever run at USD. Opening the season with impres– sive back to back victories over Loyola Marymount and Santa Clara, the optimism ran very high that USD would indeed be one of the best teams in the West Coast Conference (WCC) . Returning from last year's team were Matty Young, Jeff Ertwine, Gabe Vaca, Mike Mulvihill, and Bill Clark. Newcomers to the teamwere Pete ,.. .....,,........, Mauro and Dave Lerman, trans–

fers RichGomez and DeanCortez, and Freshman Brian Holmes and Mike Livingston. The Toreros continued to im– prove throughout the season, with individuals posting personal best times each week. "The team
