Black Student Union The Black Student Union (BSU) is geared to enhance the educa– tional environment of all Univer– sity of San Diego students and employees; to provide a program to increase recruitment and re– tention of African-American stu– dents. BSU provides opportuni– ties for the increased sensitivity of the student body toward mi– nority citizens through educa– tion and involvement. They also support the University and act as a positive outreach to commu– nity and minority organizations.
MEChA Movierniento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlan is a Chicano organization dedicated to draw– ing attention to the needs and concerns of Chicanos, both on the campus and in the community. Participating in a variety of volunteer services, conferences, and fund– raisers, MEChA supports students while proudly expressing their heritage- "LA RAZA". Janine Matinez Highley, a mem– ber of MEChA, believes "the group not only promotes awareness, but it gives the Mexican students at USD something to be a part of. We are effectively showing people that the Mexican culture is interesting and that Mexicans everywhere deserve respect and compassion." In exhibiting their culture, the group has sold authentic Mexican food in front of the University Center, marched in a local Mexican parade, and organized a dance from which the proceeds were donated to the construction of a mural in a local Chicano community.
