Culture and Compromise “And to the angel of the church in Pergamos write, ‘These things says He who has the sharp two-edged sword’” (Revelation 2:12). What is the most revered cultural center in the world today? It’s up for debate, but some would say London with its British Museum and National Gallery. Shanghai has more national museums (27) than any other city. Then there is Rome, with its ancient ruins and classical masterpieces from the Renaissance and Baroque eras . And we could mention Kyoto, New York City, Istanbul, Paris, Florence, Washington, D.C ., and Vienna . In ancient Greece, the city of Pergamos, a rich and powerful metropolis, would have made the list . Between the time of Alexander the Great and the emergence of the Roman Empire, the city served as the capital of the kingdom of Pergamon . From 281 to 133 bc, it grew into a major cultural center of the Greek world . It hosted the world’s second-largest library and numerous beautiful, albeit pagan, temples . You can still see many of its remarkable monuments today. When John wrote Revelation, Pergamos, the northernmost of the seven churches, was being superseded by Ephesus . While the church of Ephesus left its first love and the church of Smyrna suffered fierce persecution, the church at Pergamos represented a shift in Satan’s strategy to destroy the work of God . Instead of attack ing the church from without, the devil would now attack it from within . The period of church history symbolized by Pergamos is approximately ad 313 to 538, during which Christianity was made an official religion of the Roman state . Just as the city of Pergamos sought to exalt itself over its rival in Ephesus, so the church began to exalt itself on the earth . The Greek word gamos , which means “marriage,” symbolizes how the church during this era would be uplifted in the eyes of mankind through a union of church and state. In the creation of this religio-political power, Christianity would be infiltrated by Satan through pagan spiritualism . Thus, Pergamos was a church marked by spiritual compromise. The church of Pergamos needed to hear the words of “He who has the sharp two-edged sword.” God’s Word cuts through the pretenses of manmade tradition . When culture clashes with Christianity, when its values go against the Bible, the time has come to leave its museums . Dear Jesus, today I commit to stand alone on the Word of God. I will not compromise truth for unity with the world.

PEACE Unparalleled Gifts “Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid” (John 14:27). Before his death in 2015, King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia gave extraordinary gifts to President Obama and his family. First Lady Michelle received two diamond jewelry sets valued at over a million dollars. Jewelry sets for both daughters and watches for the president added another $300,000. But the extravagant gifts weren’t really theirs. According to U.S. policy, presidential gifts are kept at the National Archives—unless the recipient pays market value to retain them! Before His death, Jesus offered His disciples an unparalleled gift: “Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you.” Note His emphasis in the second phrase: He offered the disciples His own peace! This is the same peace that allowed Jesus to sleep in the back of a storm-tossed boat and walk on the waves. Jesus also emphasized the uniqueness of His gift: “Not as the world gives do I give to you.” The world feels at peace when everything is going well, but Jesus offered peace to His disciples the same night He predicted His betrayal. Troubled times cannot dim Christ’s peace, and nothing can take His gifts away. Along with the promised peace, Jesus instructed His disciples to refuse fear, the natural human response to trouble. Jesus knew the disciples would be tempted to fear that very evening—and He knows what trials tempt you to fear. You can allow the fear response, or you can cut it off by God’s power. Don’t let your heart be afraid , Jesus instructs you. Instead, remember His own peace can be yours. By faith, reach out and take hold of it! Prince of Peace, I choose Your peace over fear today. Thank You for sustaining me through troubled times.

Mary Magdalene

At Jesus’ Feet, Part 1

ACTUAL SIZE SAMPLE

“But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her” (Luke 10:42).

Across the United States is an increasing demand for exorcists. While many scoff at demon possession, Scripture tells us that it is indeed very real. The Bible speaks of several women who were involved in the ministry of Jesus, but none so prominent as Mary Magdalene. We know little of Mary before she met Jesus, but we can presume that her life was most likely one of deep suffering. Mark 16:9 tells us that Jesus “cast seven demons” out of her. In the Bible seven is the number that represents completion. What must it have been like to have been totally, perfectly in the throes of the prince of darkness? While we have no account of how the seven demons tortured Mary, Scripture does give us other accounts of demon-possessed people. We are told several times of a young boy whose demon repeatedly tried to kill him, “for he often [fell] into the fire and often into the water” (Matthew 17:15) in fits of epilepsy (Mark 9:18). In the case of the demoniac of the Gadarenes, he was known as a terror who ranged among graves, “crying out and cutting himself with stones” (5:5). Self-mutilating, violently disturbed, sickeningly tormented—these were the kinds of characteristics associated with demon-possessed people. But Jesus was able to heal them. When He had exorcised their demons, these people became as new. In Luke’s account of the demoniac of the Gadarenes, it states that after the Messiah had called the demons out of him, the man was “sitting at the feet of Jesus” (Luke 8:35). He was calm, peaceful, and he wanted to be with Jesus. Similarly, Luke tells us that after being healed, Mary “also sat at Jesus’ feet and heard His word” (10:39). This was her response to His saving her from her demons. She loved and revered Him more than anything or anyone else in her life. She became His faithful disciple. Here, she is depicted in contrast to her sister, Martha, who was irritated at Mary for not helping to host their guests. But Mary had realized what was important in life. She had firmly made the decision to seek Jesus first and the prize of a life lived eternally with Him.

Reflect: Have you been wrestling with your own demons? Have you tried to fight them off by yourself? Remember that Jesus is the answer, the cure, and the way everlasting. Dig Deeper: Psalm 27:4; James 2:19, 20; 1 John 4:4

It Only Takes a Spark

“The tongue is a little member and boasts great things. See how great a forest a little fire kindles!” (James 3:5).

It’s a legend, but the story seems to be just too good to fade away: A cow in the barn of a Mrs. O’Leary kicked over a lantern, and the spark from that flame started the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. As many as 300 people died, more than 100,000 were left homeless, and approximately 3.3 square miles of the city were reduced to rubble. Whether it was a barn in the alley behind what was then DeKoven Street or not, we know that something sparked that fire in Chicago, and we know that a combination of drought, wood-based construction, high winds, and a fire department skeletal crew—only 17 horse-drawn steam engines for a whole city—helped to propel the destruction. How does that incident relate to the effects of sin? In the same way that a spark set Chicago ablaze, the very first sin—eating the “forbidden fruit” by our first parents—echoed down the millennia, from one generation to the next, multiplying even more quickly and permanently than did that fire. The Puritan writer Benjamin Harris, in his 1690 New England Primer , summarized it well: “In Adam’s fall, we sinned all.” That taught a basic theological concept to generations of youngsters, and it’s true today: Because of Adam’s sin, we have a propensity, a leaning, to commit sin ourselves. The little “spark” of Adam’s sin ignited a fire that still consumes today. And even for committed Christians, repeated practice of sin can ignite an inferno of consequences. The remedy is not to walk around with a fire extinguisher. Instead, we must internalize the truth. “Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 2:5). By staying close to Jesus in prayer and in practice, we can call on His help when tempted to play with fire! Apply It: Remember that our disposition toward sin isn’t only our fault—we inherited it from Adam. But remember, too, that God will supply “the way of escape” from every temptation if we call on Him! hummingbirds

ACTUAL SIZE SAMPLE

“[W]hile I was speaking in prayer, the man Gabriel … being caused to fly swiftly, reached me about the time of the evening offering” (Daniel 9:21). There are over 300 kinds of hummingbirds in the world, which come in every color of the rainbow. The smallest is the bee hummingbird from Cuba—the smallest bird in the world. It is only two inches long and weighs less than a dime at .07 ounces. The largest is the giant hummingbird that can reach a whopping eight inches in length. Even though hummingbirds are small in size, they have enormous appetites. Hummingbirds feed often and must consume more than their body weight in food each day. (I would have to eat more than 160 pounds of food a day to do that!) In order to obtain enough nectar, they feed every 10 or 15 minutes from dawn until dusk. Hummingbirds consume between four and seven calories a day. That may not seem like much, but if humans (who normally eat 3,500 calories a day) had the metabolism of a hummingbird, they would have to consume approximately 155,000 calories a day! The hummingbird’s copious need for calories is because of their extremely high heart rate and metabolism. Hummingbirds are not very social animals, which is why you never see them flying in flocks. In fact, males and females live apart until breeding season. After mating, the female is on her own to build the nest and raise her young. The females usually lay one or two very tiny eggs about the size of a pinto bean. When they hatch out, these tiny babies are very vulnerable to predators, including large insects! When it comes to flying, nobody does it better than a hummingbird. Like a helicopter, it can go up, down, sideways, backwards, and even upside down! This is because most of its wing is made of hand bones instead of arm bones like other birds. The ruby-throated hummingbird, for example, is reported to have a wing rate of 70 beats per second, or 4,200 per minute. Hummingbirds are such good fliers that most of them never walk more than two inches, and they can terrorize birds 10 times their own size with their acrobatic skill. Hummingbirds are also amazing hunters of insects, frequently plucking mosquitoes, gnats, and fruit flies right out of the air while hovering. Did you know that the Bible teaches that angels do not travel at the speed of sound or even at the speed of light but rather at the speed of thought? The angel Gabriel came to Daniel from heaven while he was still praying!
