Well it's finally here, your April Beacon, I know you've been so anxious for this one because it contains the much awaited O.D. Work Weekend Schedule. You can have a look and see your weekend and all the mates you'll be kabitzing with as you earn your time and always remember, this is why our Dues are so Low.:):) You'll also get an advance look at some of the projects already underway, and for the first time in Club history our Burgee has traveled to the "Forbidden Island" a place that until recently could land you in the "grey bar motel" for a very long time. Looks pretty inviting now though. Of particular note in the event flyer section is the ABYA Spring Dinner Dance ticket purchase. This one sells out fast so get your tickets early. And if you're about to spend $$$ on your mistress with some spring fitting out or maintenance remember to use the Club's discount code at any Boat US store, you'll find it and the certificate at the end of this Beacon, all you really need is the magic number highlighted on the pages. Blue Skies Following Seas, Ron

On March 10 th , NCYC was well represented by Flag officers, spouses and members at Mariners Church for the Blessing of the Fleet. It is truly an honor to be part of such a long-standing tradition in such a historical church. I share that blessing with all the membership for safe harbors and safe travels this season. It goes without saying that, it was also nice to spend time with some NCYC family members!! You can sure tell that the Spring Equinox has arrived at NCYC. Today (April 1st), Fin three is in the water and the contractor is hard at work replacing the siding on the upper half of the club house. They intend to be completed before the first Elite Brigade, making way for the membership to work on the other projects. The Ancient Mariners project, replacing the NCYC sign, is well underway and the First Mates project, installing air-conditioning in the kitchen wash-area is on target. There is also a small contingent busy planning and making sure that the walkway project along the new seawall unfolds without any glitches.

Although there has been much activity preparing for the club opening, there is still much to accomplish, and we need as much help as possible to accomplish all the tasks. Please try to attend the Elite Brigade’s on April 13th, 20th, 27th and May 4th and the Work Parties on May 11th and 18th. With everyone’s participation and a little help from Mother Nature we should be in good shape. Another date to remember is May 5th, for the First Mates Annual Fashion Show and once again it promises to be an event to remember. The OD work schedule was recently released. Please ensure that you know what weekend you are working. If you are not sure, please reach out to the Club Secretary, Frank Corcoran. By doing our part, we continue the tradition and remain a “working club”. Ron Braun is working hard on assembling the Weekday Manager schedule. Currently we are down to three open weeks. If you or a team of members are interested in taking a week, please reach out to Ron at crbraun10@comcast.net. The available weeks are June 23-28, July 28-August 2 and August 11-16.

It has been many years since I have taken advantage of attending The Blessing of the Fleet held at the historical Mariners Church of Detroit. Terri and I attended the March 10, 2019 service with Commodore Ian and Marie, Rear Commodore Glenn Nixon, Chaplin Art and Sue, Bob and Cheryl Swatosh, Peter and Norma Frame, Terry Steinmacher, Kathy Fowler, Tony Ellul, Tim Grennan and Andrea Grennan . It was a wonderful service well attended by the International Ship Masters Association, both United States and Canadian Navy and Coast Guard forces, United States Naval Sea Cadets, Power Squadrons, Local and State Government groups as well as local Yacht, Boat and Sail Clubs. We are looking forward to next years’ service. Afterwards our group enjoyed launch at Sinbad’s Restaurant. Thanks to Commodore Ian and Marie for hosting and making the arrangements.

On Saturday March 23rd I had the opportunity to visit the club with a small group of members lead by Commodore Ian to survey the work to be done specifically with the electrical, water supply and decking along the new sea wall. As usual there is a lot of work around the island that will have to be done before Island opening weekend. Some of us, that are able, will be available during the week to run the fin to transport our siding crew back and forth from the mainland as well as get some jobs done during the days that we are there. This is the time you should be checking the calendar making plans for when you can make it to the island not only to get your work hours in but to get reacquainted with your fellow members.

I had the pleasure of participating in the Blessing of the Fleet at Mariner's Church on Sunday March 10th for the first time. The service was rich with tradition and history and made me proud to be a fellow Great Lakes mariner. The NCYC Flag was well represented along with several other members and spouses. I encourage all members to consider attending next March. It is finally feeling like winter might be done with us. Of course, we will certainly have some surprises the next few weeks, weather wise, but it appears we will be given the opportunity to get a head start on preparing the clubhouse and grounds for the season. A small group of us, Commodore Ian, Vice Commodore Bill, Supplies Director Dale, P/C Brian McEvoy and Mike DeNeve made a short visit to the Island on March 23 to scope out the work to be done to restore the docks, walkway and water and electrical facilities to the new section of seawall. Thanks to Dennis Biel for shuttling the group to island. It was no surprise to find a lot of heavy work ahead. Please do not hesitate to contact any Board member if you would like to help the next couple of Saturdays before the Elite Brigade weekends begin. Commodore Ian and I also took a first look at the project to erect a new sign on the North-West corner of the island. There is some heavy work involved in that project as well. I will be looking for help starting the first Elite Brigade on April 13. Everyone enjoy the warmer weather and hope to see many of you in a few short weeks.

As I reported late last month, long time member Marlene O’Connor, wife of Bill, passed away IN Florida. Many years ago, it was a well known practice after the bar that you were welcome to the houseboat moored in the first well in the West harbor for the delicacy of “fried Spam and peanut butter toast.” You could depend on this scrumptious nourishing treat before turning in for the night. Let’s pray for Marlene that she has found peace in her final resting place. Bill, our thoughts are with you and your family. It is also important to keep Mary Stackpoole in our thoughts and prayers for a speedy recovery.

most everything has come alive, not long ago the snow lay deep and all the flowers fast asleep.

The trees all seemed so cold and bare, now buds are showing everywhere, they all have seemed to take a cue to usher in Spring’s lovely view. Today I saw a “volunteer”, a Springtime flower sweet and rare, it stood so lovely , and with grace, to show again its pretty face. The cold and snow did not deter or harm its color anywhere. for they were in God’s loving care- Spring just arrived today.

Attention North Channel Yacht Club Members The North Channel Yacht Club Ancient Mariners would like to invite you to join our elite group. Requirements for membership are that you need to be at least 60 years old, or be retired from a job. (Not both) The annual dues are only $10.00. The purpose of the Ancient Mariners is to have fun! We have a meeting the second Tuesday of each month and a luncheon at various restaurants the third Thursday of each month. The luncheons are held on the island during the summer months. (There are no meetings in the summer months) The Ancient Mariners have a weekend on the island in the summer that we use as a fund raiser. We always have a fun day planned with a delicious dinner and a fun event planned for after dinner. The proceeds of these events go back into the club for various improvements. The Ancient Mariners have provided the TV's in the upstairs bedrooms, the swim dock in the swim hole, help paying down the NCYC debt, helping Harbor & Grounds with the water spigots, and many many other improvements. Vice-Commodore’s Comments Vice Commodore, Bill Calihan Vice Commodore Bill Calihan congratulated Commodore Ian and his lady Marie for planning and hosting an outstanding Commodore Ball. A great time was had by all. He also congratulated P/C Randy Pagel for his great choices for the member of the year award and the spirit award. V/C Bill commented with this being the first function of the year going so well, he is looking forward to an outstanding season.

Rear-Commodore’s Comments

Rear Commodore, Glenn Nixon Congratulations and a warm “thank you” to Commodore Ian and his Lady Marie for an outstanding Commodores Ball. The venue, food, entertainment and fellowship were absolutely fantastic. Winter is passing quickly, thank goodness, with the Detroit boat show coming up this weekend. Every year it seems once the boat show is passed, spring comes before we can catch our breath. There is a lot of work ahead to prepare for this coming season. We have a very talented board that is definitely up to the task of organizing ourselves for a fun and productive year. Our membership is growing and will be called on to attack the difficult task of restoring the first 100 feet of docks and walkways in addition to finishing the upper level siding. It seems whenever there is a need, our membership steps up and delivers. I am confident we will again answer the call and complete the projects in time to enjoy the season. I look forward to participating in the blessing of the fleet coming up a few short weeks from now and starting on our projects as soon as our island emerges from her deep freeze! Financial Report Treasurer, Brian Fringer Treasurer Brian Fringer distributed the financial report and commented that it was a quiet January. Membership dues are starting to come in. Brian reached out to Bultynck and Company to get started on the NCYC tax returns. He was waiting for a response for a request from Ancient Mariners and First Mates so they could get started on the return. A request for an extension was filed which is normal. Brian encouraged board members to stop by the bank to sign appropriate forms. MOTION: Moved by Debbie Siwek and seconded by P/C Randy Pagel to approve the Financial Report. Motion Carried ABYA Report P/C Randy Pagel P/C Randy Pagel noted that ABYA is hosting a booth at the boat show and that he has provided flyers promoting NCYC to be handed out at the booth. He reminded everyone that the Midland rendezvous is coming up on March 8.9.and10 and encouraged everyone to attend. He also said that Leslie Leitch is putting together a new ABYA web site and is encouraging NCYC to send over anything that they wish to publish on the site. Correspondence All

Frank Corcoran read a letter form a 19 year member who stated one of the great things about NCYC is our traditions. The member was concerned that the traditions were not written down and may soon fade away. The member suggested that these traditions should be formulated into policies. The member wanted to specifically address the issue of OD Assignments. There are 20 weekends that require an OD. In the past the OD assignments have been given to board members and flag officers first. The member noted that the members should be given first choice on these weekends and they should be selected based on seniority and experience. The reason this is important is that there are many groups that would like to stay together from year to year. After some discussion It was agreed that the request be forwarded to P/C Rick Romatz who is in charge of the policy committee to determine if this request is a tradition or a policy and the committee then can report back to the board with their recommendations. It was also discussed that the policy committee should also create a section in the roster for traditions. This would be accomplished by the policy committee recommending a by-law change to address traditions in addition to policies.

Frank Corcoran also read a letter from the Great Lakes Cruising Club who would like to use NCYC to host an ABYA dinner on September 9. It was noted that First Mates President Shelly Sweier was copied on this correspondence and that all profits from the dinner would go the First Mates of NCYC.

Motion : Moved by P/C Randy Pagel and seconded by Brian Fringer to allow the dinner to move forward on that date. Motion Carried.

Frank Corcoran also read a letter from the Inter-Lake Yachting Association asking that NCYC consider advertising in their year book. They included information with pricing etc…After discussion no action was taken.

CURRENT BUSINESS Activities –

Tom Huntley No report and Tom advised he will be on vacation and not in attendance at the February meeting. Clubhouse John Sweier Old Business: Item # 6; Glass Dishwasher Item: look at the feasibility and cost to replace throwaway plastic beer (16oz) and mixed drink (12oz) cups with reusable/washable plastic or glass cups. • Replace “throwaway” Beer and mixed drink cups with washable cups (approximately $2,500 spend yearly on plastic throwaway’s.), no recycling currently available. Currently all cups go to trash and landfill o Glass washer quote requested from Jack Lobaido and from ‘Great Lakes Hotel Supply  Internet prices range from $2,000 to $6,000 o Plastic Mug/Stein quote requested from Jack Lobaido.

SEMCO, area natural gas supplier, has been contacted to quote costs to convert NCYC from propane to natural gas. Quote expected week of 2/17/2019.

LED/ENERGY analysis update: last month I stated an energy assistance program thru DTE to help offset cost associated with upgrading to high efficiency electrical items. This statement was in error, the assistance program is actually through CONSUMERS ENERGY, and they are not an NCYC provider. NCYC will have to cover the costs to upgrade. Mary Stackpoole will no longer be able to continue the cleaning of the NCYC clubhouse due to health reasons. I discussed with Tom Stackpoole and he mentioned his daughter and son in law would be interested in taking over the cleaning duties. BRIAN FRINGER will send to John Sweier the line item budget and I will then set up and interview with them for the position. Tom Altobelli A. I have some good news about trash pick up for the island this year. As you remember we had trouble with not having enough capacity for our trash on the busy weekends and overloaded the dumpster or had to leave trash on the island until we could get a second pick up. The off schedule pick up for additional trash cost us $200 per pick up. Over the off season I received a survey from Waste Management and expressed my concerns over a one size fits all pick up schedule and that we needed an alternative to what we currently have at a reasonable cost. I also mentioned that I was looking at other vendors as an option. As a result of the survey I received a phone call from a Waste Management representative that described his job as a "problem fixer". After some discussion he offered to increase the schedule to 2 pick ups a week for only an additional $6.00 a month. Six Dollars not a type-o. So beginning April 1, we will have trash picked up on Mondays and Thursdays. Yeah. Harbor & Grounds B. I have purchased 8 more of the Weber Spirit BBQ grills for the Island. Completing the purchase for grills which I hope will be for a few years. The grills will be stored in the Lumber Jack warehouse and delivered free when we are ready for them. General feedback from the members who used the grills was very positive. I'm hopeful that purchasing these better grills will save us money in the long run.
