Expected loss

A financial institution’s exposure in the event of a counterparty’s default. EAD covers on- and off-balance sheet exposures. Off-balance sheet exposures are converted into balance sheet equivalents with the help of internal or regulatory conversion factors (drawdown assumption). The price that would be received to sell an asset or paid to transfer a liability in a standard arm’s length transaction between market participants at the measurement date. Its primary objective is to coordinate international efforts by national financial authorities and international standard setters in the regulation and supervision of financial institutions. Conceived at the G20 summit in London in April 2009, the FSB functions as the successor to the Financial Stability Forum, which was founded in 1999 under a G7 initiative.
