Arizona Resources: The 5 Cs

A long time ago not many people lived in Arizona. Before Arizona was a state, most people thought Arizona was just a dry desert with cactus and rattlesnakes.

But Arizona had 5 big resources. Resources were how people made money in Arizona. Resources made jobs for people.

Arizona’s 5 biggest resources all started with the letter “C”. They are called the 5 Cs. They were Copper, Cattle, Cotton, Citrus, and Climate.

Copper is still an important resource in Arizona. Copper is a metal. It is used to make pipes and wire. Copper was used to make pennies, but not anymore.

The Morenci Mine in Arizona is still open. It is one of the largest copper mines in the world.

Bisbee and Jerome are old copper mining towns in Arizona. Those mines are not used anymore. Tourists can visit them and learn about mining.

Cattle was another important resource in Arizona. Farmers raised cattle for meat and dairy. Today there are not as many cattle farms in Arizona.

Cotton Field

Cotton was another resource in Arizona. Cotton needs a lot of water to grow. One problem is that Arizona does not have a lot of water.

The farmers in Arizona sell cotton to factories. Cotton is used to make clothes.

Citrus grows well in Arizona. It was another resource. Farmers grew oranges, lemons, limes, and grapefruit. They sold the citrus fruit and juice.

Climate was another great resource in Arizona, and still is today. Tourists spend money to visit sunny Arizona. They stay in hotels and eat at restaurants.
