Product Design

Overview Product Design allows students to specialise in their preferred element of Technology which will allow many to work to their strengths and access the skills required for a range of careers. The new AQA GCSE D&T specification states that we will be looking at broadening students knowledge through linking core subject knowledge into different applications of Design and Technology. Students that choose to study Product Design must understand the written and academic requirements of the subject. This is not a 100% practical marked course. The non-exam assessment is an individual project that requires a substantial commitment to independent learning. Costs A letter will be provided at the start of Year 10 to enable you to chosen which items you may like to purchase from the School. You alternatively may choose to buy them elsewhere.

Trips Design trip in Year 10 destination TBC. Cost approximately £25 per person

Pathways Further Education: Product Design enables the ability to take a wide range of Design related courses at A level and College University: Product Design, Illustration, Computer / Game Design, Architecture Career: Architecture, Computer Aided Design, Advertising, Website Design, Product Design, Landscape Design, Interior Design, Graphic Design, Illustration, Furniture Design

50% of GCSE, 2 hour exam

50% of GCSE, 30–35 hours approx

Section A – Core technical principles (20 marks)

Practical application of: • Core technical principles • Specialist technical principles • Designing and making principles Tasks to be critically explored and developed: • Substantial design and make task • Assessment criteria: Investigating, Designing, Making, Analysing and Evaluating

A mixture of multiple choice and short answer questions assessing a breadth of technical knowledge and understanding. Section B – Specialist technical principles (30 marks) Several short answer questions (2–5 marks) and one extended response to assess a more in depth knowledge of technical principles. Section C – Designing and making principles (50 marks) A mixture of short answer and extended response questions including a 12 mark design question
