The brief: Zambia is richly endowed with environment and natural resource (ENR) assets, but future economic and environmental sustainability is dependent on improved management. Ecorys’ International Development team is assisting the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Finland with its support to civil society organisations in Zambia, with the main objective of improving environmental and natural resource management in the country. Civil society is well placed to play a central role in this and Phase 1 of the Civil Society Environment Fund showed that, with support, it can do so. This support tested the absorptive and technical capacity of Zambia’s environmental sector and learnt key lessons on how these can be strengthened effectively. Phase 2 is building on this to achieve greater results and consolidate gains through building sustainable capacity across Zambian Civil Society. Theproject’ssupportcoversvariousareas, includingfinancing, capacity development, information and communication, networking and project management.
