Single Touch Payroll What do I need to know before 1 July 2019? Single Touch Payroll (STP) will change the way that employers report employees’ tax and superannuation contributions to the Australian Tax Office (ATO). Through this new system, information will be sent directly to the ATO via payroll or accounting software every pay day. Larger businesses have been required to comply with this new system since mid-2018. From 1 July 2019, business owners with 19 or less employees must start reporting through STP. Your payroll cycle will not change, and you will still be able to pay your employees weekly, fortnightly or monthly. When you report to the ATO through STP, your employees will be able to view their year to date tax and super information through myGov. STP reporting is currently available through payroll, accounting and business management software and most software providers are offering STP enabled products so make sure your software offers STP reporting. If you do not use any software products, then look at the ATO’s register of providers who intend to offer Low-cost STP solutions for businesses with 1- 4 employees. The ATO advise you to: • Visit www.ato.gov.au/stp for more information and to subscribe to updates. • Find out how your software provider will offer STP reporting. Review your business process before 1 July and check that any payroll staff know about the STP obligations. You need to ensure you are: • paying your employees correctly; • calculating your employees’ super entitlements correctly; • addressing overpayments correctly; and, • maintaining accurate information including names, addresses, and date of birth records.
