Some of the earliest evidence of human activity has been left in stone: farmers arrived from Europe around 3,000 years bce , erecting the first stone circles, the most famous of which is Stonehenge. Following an initial invasion headed by Julius Caesar in 55 bce , the Romans had occupied England, Wales, and Scotland by 140 ce . After over 400 years of rule, the Romans withdrew from Britain leaving an enduring legacy, including an extensive road network; water supply, sewage, and sanitation systems; and the foundations of many of the country’s major cities.
