Mаартен Баас (Maarten Baas) не любит слов, а предпочитает работать с тем невыразимым, что они скрывают. В каждом новом объекте он от- крывает себя и дверцу в мир ярких красок и идей, живых линий и форм, детской простоты, открытости, принципиальной непредсказуемости. Он верит в себя, в людей, которые его окружают, и значимость того, что он создает, и, быть может, именно эта способность всегда быть и оста- ваться собой в дизайнерском сообществе – и есть тайна его ошелом- ляющего успеха. Со времени окончания Академии дизайна Эйндхове- на (2002 год) Mаартен Баас успел создать такие знаковые проекты, как Smoke, Hey, Chair be a bookshelf, Treasure Furniture, Flatpack Furniture, Clay, Sculpt, The Chankley Bore, многие из которых были выставлены в музеях по всему миру или приобретены самыми именитыми дизайнера- ми нашего времени. – Дизайн – это универсальная деятельность по преобразованию окружающего человека мира, своего рода упорядочивание, борьба с хаосом – для одних, средство коммуникации – для других, способ на- полнить мир эстетическим смыслом – для третьих. Какова ваша мис- сия в дизайне? – Мне довольно трудно говорить о «миссии», поскольку я бы хотел быть человеком со свободным сердцем. Но должен при- знаться, что во мне есть что-то от кальвиниста, которому всегда нужно знать мотивы всего того, что он делает. Поэтому мне все же кажется, что мое предназначение заключается в том, чтобы вдох- новлять других и создавать произведения, преображающие мир вокруг. Я нахожусь в постоянном стремлении делать все возмож- ное, чтобы создавать вещи настолько хорошо, насколько это толь- ко возможно себе представить. – Что вдохновляет вас как творца, оказывает наиболее значимое влияние на ваши творческие открытия? – Мои работы ассоциируются у меня с надеждой и людьми, с традициями, естественными вещами. Мне нравится природа, по-

тому что она очень органична: многие вещи в ней меняются, она обычно медленно реагирует на изменения. Я стремлюсь творить подобно ей, потому что она привносит гармонию в окружающий мир, преображает все вокруг. and people, with traditions and things of nature. I like nature because it is very or- ganic: lots of things within nature are changing and the nature is usually slow in responding to any changes. I like designing in the way the nature does it, when it cre- ates harmony around. I hope that my works are as beautiful as nature and as individual as each single man. – What is the essence of your design? What from and how is it borne? – Design is like cookery. I make a dish of available ingredients. Being an experienced cook, I have no need in recipes (these are sketches in designing); I simply make the final draft of the main menu. If the dishes are unsavoury, I would remake them; other- wise I would make more and better… – Which ideas found in the Design Academy

What is your mission in de- signing? – It’s quite heavy to talk in terms of «mission», as I want to be right hearted, but I must admit, there’s a kind of Calvin- ist in me, who wants to have a reason for what I’m doing. So, I think indeed it’s to inspire others, and to make pieces which contribute to things we surround ourselves with. To take steps, which stretch myself to try my very best to make things as good as I can. – What inspires you as a creator? In each new object he reveals him- self and opens the door in the world of bright colours and ideas, lively lines and forms, child- ly simplicity, openness and general unpredict- ability. He believes in himself and in the peo- ple around him, in the significance of what he has been creating and, perhaps, it is this abil- ity to remain himself in the designers’ commu- nity that makes the secret of his overwhelming success.
