After the choir has finished the Gloria, the celebrant turns to the people and salutes them, saying: - C. Peace be with you. R. And with thy spirit. C. Let us pray. Then follows the Collect, so called because it is the united prayer of prie t and people. 'l'he celebrant sings it \\ith hands uplifted. Collect § RA "T us, 0 Lord, we be eech Thee, to glory in the solemnity of Thy blessed Apostle Thomas: so Lhat we may ever be en- couraged by his protection, and with due devotion imitate his faith. After the Collect of the day the following Collect for the Bishop-elect is said under one conclusion: - (f TTE D to our supplications, Almighty God, so that what is to be performed by our humble ministry may be fulfilled by the effect of Thy power. Through Our Lord Jesus Clui t Thy Son, Who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Roi y Gho t, world without end. Amen. Then follows the commemoration of the Advent Feria: _ S TI~ up, 0 Lord, we beseech Thee, Thy power and come, and with great might succor us: that, by the help of Thy grace. that which is hindered by our sins may be hastened by Thy merciful indulgence. burnt. Amen. He then incense~ the altar· ancl is himself incensed by his deacon. Then he goes to his throne at the Gospel side of the altar, 1rnd proceeds with the ~[ass. In the meantime the assistant bishops lead the Bishop-elect to his clm,1el, and there ha,ing laid aside the cope, ministers put on his a;dals, while he reads the usual psalm and prayers, if he has not already done so. Then he receive the pectoral C'ross and adjusts the st~le in such a manner· that it may ha~g from ~s shoulders. After that, he is vested "ith the tumc, dalmatic, cha uble, and maniple, and then advances to his altar, where, standing between the assistant bishops, with uncoYered head, he reads the whole office of the :Mass with the Consecrator. He does not tmn arom1d to the people when he says "The Lord be with you," as is wont to be done in other !\lasses. Proper of the Mass of Saint Thomas Introit Psalm 138 ~-0 ME Thy friend, O God, are made exceedingly honorable; their principality is exceeding! y strengthened. Ps. Lord, Thou hast proved me, and known me: Thou hast known my sitting down and my rising up. V. Glory be to Lhe_ F~ther.and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the begmnrng, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. After the celebrant has read the Introit, then, alternately and with his ministers, he says: -

The celebrant now rises, uncovered, and intones the Gloria in Excelsis Deo, that is, he sings the first words of the hynm, which is then taken· up by the choir; the celebrant a~d ministers sitting in the place prepared for them m1til it is ternunated. 14
