A Tale OF Two Monuments
Memphis – Wake Up!
We have moved from a period of slavery that existed for over 240 years in America which was then followed by a period of segregation for the next 99 years after the Civil War ended. With the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. in 1968, we now are 50 more years further down the road, but we still don’t seem to want to let go of the anger and frustration of our past. We seem to be entering an era of stupidity where we think destroying two Confederate monuments of two Memphians who died over 128 years ago will somehow restore our dignity…but at best, only serves to give a certain segment of our community a “feel-good moment” of satisfaction. This entire episode is simply a political diversion from addressing the REAL problems that face the city of Memphis! Regardless of your race or opinion, none of us living today are responsible for the past regardless of who our ancestors might have been or what they might have done. Therefore, it would be wise for ALL citizens of Memphis to put aside our historical differences and personal prejudices and come together so we can address our current day problems and opportunities.
