ES Las autoridades del país han encontra- do así una forma de ecoturismo con el que mostrar al visitante, subido sobre embarca- ciones aptas para dos pasajeros y de cerca de diez metros de largo, las virtudes de la isla, que de otra forma permanecerían inédi- tas, a través de uno de sus ríos más impor- tantes situado en la zona de Port Antonio. Hace décadas la estrella de Hollywood Errol Flynn vivía en las inmediaciones y fue quien pensó que pasear en estas barcas de ma- dera podría convertirse en una interesante atracción turística. Emprendedores locales le escucharon y organizaron desde entonces tours que, debido a su popularidad, ahora se han extendido a otras zonas y otras actividades, como los viajes en kayak. En la actualidad, la navegación por Río Grande su- pone la segunda actividad de los visitantes de Jamaica por detrás de sus playas.

EN The vessels are around 10 metres long and perfect for conveying two people along one of Jamaica’s most important rivers, located in the Port Antonio district. What’s more, they have allowed the country’s authorities to develop a form of ecotourism that lets visitors see hidden virtues of the island that would otherwise go unseen. It has been decades since the Hollywood star Errol Flynn, who lived in the area, came up with the idea of turning these wooden boats into a fascinating tourist attraction. The idea caught the attention of local entrepreneurs, who began to organise tours whose popularity has seen them extended to other areas and other activities, such as kayak trips. A boat trip along the Rio Grande now o ers visitors to Jamaica another alter- native to its beaches.

DE Die Behörden des Landes haben auf diese Weise eine Form des Ökotourismus erschlossen, der es den Besuchern ermöglicht, eine Seite der Insel kennen zu lernen, die ansonsten unentdeckt bliebe. Auf den fast zehn Meter langen Booten, die einen der wichtigsten Flüsse Jamaikas in der Gegend von Port Anto- nio befahren, finden je zwei Fahrgäste Platz. Vor mehreren Jahrzehnten lebte der Hollywood- Star Errol Flynn in der Nähe des Flusses. Er hatte die Idee, dass sich die Fahrt auf diesen Holzbooten für Touristen eignen könnte. Unter- nehmer aus der Region schenkten ihm Gehör und organisieren seitdem Touren. Diese Touren sind so beliebt, dass sie inzwischen auch in anderen Gebieten und mit anderen Booten wie z.B. Kajaks angeboten werden. Gegenwärtig steht die Fahrt auf dem Rio Grande bei den Besuchern Jamaikas nach den Stränden an zweiter Stelle auf der Beliebtheitsskala.

ES Toda sociedad tiene una melodía que define su esencia. En Jamaica se recogen desde el siglo XIX las tradiciones sonoras de los continentes africano y europeo. El re- sultado es el mento, género musical que es considerado el padre de otros tan populares como el reggae y el ska y que se toca con instrumentos acústicos.

EN Every society has a melody that cap- tures its essence. Since as far back as the 19th century, Jamaica has been a meeting place for the music of Africa and Europe. The result of this intercontinental fusion is mento, a musical genre played using acoustic instruments and regarded as the forerunner of other popular genres such as reggae and ska.

DE Jede Gesellschaft hat eine Melodie, die ihr Wesen ausdrückt. In Jamaika vereinen sich seit dem 19. Jahrhundert die musikali- schen Traditionen des afrikanischen und des europäischen Kontinents. Daraus entstand der Mento, eine Musikform, die als Vorstufe anderer berühmter musikalischer Formen wie des Reggae und des Ska gilt. Der Mento wird mit Akustikinstrumenten gespielt.
