2.05.A - Combined Oral and Nasopharyngeal Airway Station

Equipment for this station •

Airway Manikin or Head

Cohort Bag with Airway Adjuncts

Precautions: Have the student measure, select and insert an oral adjunct and a nasal adjunct as per the skill sheet’s requirements. Do not engage the student in conversation or questioning – this is supposed to evaluate skills performance not cognitive knowledge. THE INSTRUCTOR MUST BE ABLE TO INTUBATE A MANIKIN TO RUN THIS STATION Objectives: 1. Demonstrate the insertion of an oral airway. (pp 339–340, Skill Drill 9-3)

2. Demonstrate the insertion of a nasal airway. (pp 341–342, Skill Drill 9-5)

Setup: Please the manikin on a surface and lay out the devices. Between students try to rearrange the airways and dry the nasal airway so it is not obvious to the student which one the previous student utilized.

Instructions to be read to students: “Please insert an appropriate oral airway into this patient as per the skills sheet.”

“Please insert an appropriate nasal airway into this patient as per the skills sheet.”

NOTE:

If the student perceives the nasal airway station as a continuation of the oral airway station (meaning he thinks the patient gagged on the oral airway and now needs a nasal airway) he/she should be given credit for the TAKES BSI PRECAUTIONS step as he/she already took BSI precautions in the oral airway scenario.
