C.2.A – Bleeding Control (~30 minutes) Bleeding Control Instructor Guidance

Objectives: 1. Demonstrate emergency medical care of the patient with external bleeding using direct pressure. (pp 788–789, Skill Drill 23- 1) 2. Demonstrate emergency medical care of the patient with external bleeding using a commercial tourniquet. (pp 790–792, Skill Drill 23-2) 3. Demonstrate emergency medical care of the patient who shows signs and symptoms of internal bleeding. (pp 794–796, Skill Drill 23-4)

Setup: You will need your cohort bag. You will also need special dressings: - Cohort Bag with tourniquet

Deployment: Deploy your students in teams of 2 students. One will be the patient, the other the rescuer. Have them treat the following isolated injuries (they do not need to do patient assessment): - Arterial bleed to forearm with hypovolemic shock - Laceration to hand from cutting a bagel (ends with direct pressure/elevation) - Head laceration to right forehead from fall (ends with direct pressure/elevation)

C.2.B –Bleeding Control (30 min)

Takes appropriate BSI

Places direct pressure on the wound

NOTE: Examiner states the wound continues to bleed

Applies tourniquet

NOTE: Examiner states the patient is exhibiting signs of hypoperfusion

Properly positions the patient

Administers high concentration oxygen

Initiates steps to prevent heat loss from the patient

Indicates the need for immediate transportation
