TEXAS HOLD 'EM RETURNS TO HBCC!

CURRENT HOURS OF OPERATION

Club ANNOUNCEMENTS Dear Members , Many members have inquired about a member referral program in which they could invite friends who are members at other clubs or facilities to join Horseshoe Bend Country Club for no initiation fee . While we cannot offer this program for our Golf Membership as this category remains nearly full , we are happy to continue growing our Tennis Membership by offering this program . Effective February 1 , 2017 through March 30 , 2017 , an HBCC member may recommend a friend for Tennis Membership with no initiation fee due . The criteria for the potential member is as follows : • Must be recommended for Tennis Membership by a current HBCC member in good standing • Meets income requirements of the Club • Meets Club credit criteria • Personally vetted by owner or GM Current Horseshoe Bend CC Social and Swimmembers in good standing are also eligible to upgrade to the Tennis Membership at no additional initiation fee . Members accepted through this program would not receive credit for the initiation fee , given that no initiation is collected at the time of joining . This would only be relevant should the new member be interested in upgrading to a golf member in the future . This upgrade from Tennis to Golf Membership would remain an option and the full golf initiation fee would be due at the time of upgrade . It is hoped that current members will recommend people consistent with the Club ’ s values ., thus ensuring an atmosphere of mutual respect and enjoyment for all members . For assistance with your member recommendations and the application process , please contact our Membership Manager , Christine Laspisa at claspisa @ horseshoebendcc . com or call ( 770 ) 992 - 2310 .

Our new menu is very unique as many elements are made in - house . What do you have the most fun cooking ? T : We have the most fun around the center kitchen prep table making the pastas . We can talk about what is going on both here in the kitchen and in life ; it relaxes you . My second favorite are our braised items . As a chef , the procedure and time spent on creating the dishes is a fantastic way for me to remember my start in the classical culinary world !

The house - made fresh pasta makes all the difference in a dish . Tell us a little about how you " dough " it !

T : With our gnocchi , we start with impastata ricotta because it is the BEST on the market , " 00 " flour , eggs , salt , and pepper to make the dough . Once we mix it , we let it rest . We then take a small amount and cook it to make sure that the finished product has the flavor profile we are looking for in that particular dish . We do this with most everything we do . We test and make sure it ' s exactly what we want to present before we send it out to our membership .

Of the new lunch and dinner menus , which dish is your favorite ?

T : Our menus are kid - & adult - friendly , and can be customized to any member ' s flavor profile or most allergy requests , including gluten - free . Being the parent of a child with special needs , that is the most important thing to me when dining out , and was kept in the forefront when designing our menus . Of course , if there is a specific request , members may inform the server , and we will always do our best to accommodate it ! Anyone with children will tell you they can be PICKY ! Any recommendations to help parents get them to try something new ? grandmother and grandmother making gnocchi in an assembly line on a bed sheet on Sunday after church . At the same time , my mother would clean and prep the mushrooms and make the pan alfredo sauce that went along with it . Then mid - week , when my father ( who was chef ) was off , we would have steak frites and fondue fries , very similar to our HBCC recipe , for dinner ! T : At lunch , the Cubano sandwich ! It reminds me of sitting on South Beach relaxing and taking in the sites . For dinner , my two favorites are the ricotta gnocchi and steak frites . The dishes have great memories for me ! It ' s something tennis players love to feel ... standing on the corner of the court , knees bent softly , weight forward , racquet light in the hands , eyes intensely watching the opposing player toss up the ball . Inhale . Their breath holds for just a moment as the " pop " of the serve echos . Hold it a moment longer as reflexes reach out with a forehand return . Exhale with the power and adrenaline rush of the swing . There ' s something about that first returned ball ! At Horseshoe Bend CC , our players can experience this rush in so many different ways ! Those who are new to the game often are unaware of how individual surfaces may change how they play , or how mere degrees in how the racquet is held can send the ball either low over the net or 30 feet in the air . So what exactly does all the jargon mean ? Director of Athletics , Luke Burden , breaks it down and makes it easy to see why it ' s a sport everyone should play .

L : Tennis is a great “ lifelong ” sport ! Not only is it a great social outlet for many people , it has many health benefits that truly make it a game that can be played at any stage of life . Being non - contact and low impact , tennis is a relatively injury - free sport while helping to improve aerobic fitness , anaerobic fitness , hand / eye coordination , mental alertness , body control , speed , and strength , just to name a few . Tennis is a wonderful ' lifelong " sport ! What about the game makes it so appealing to all ages and abilities ? "Programs are designed to allow each player, no matter what level, to gain the instruction they need in a fun environment." With three different playing surfaces to choose from , what is the best way for a player to determine the best for them ? L : All three surfaces offer different characteristics . The red clay court are the “ slowest ” courts we have . This provides players with more time between shots , although it will mean you have to move to the ball , as it will not bounce through the court . This court will also be most affected by the weather , causing even slower conditions on damp / cool days .

The hard courts are what most people have had experience with and

what the majority of tennis is played on , particularly for juniors . The speed of the HBCC hard courts is medium to fast , meaning the ball will contact the racquet at a faster speed . Hard courts will also offer a “ truer ” bounce , with less bad bounces than you will experience on a clay court . The Har Tru , or green clay , courts sit in the middle " speed wise " between the red clay and hard courts . They offer a softer playing surface while still having great playability .

We were honored to receive a 2015 USTA Outstanding Facilities Award for being one of the top six privately - owned clubs in the nation . Can you explain exactly what that honor means for HBCC members ? L : This prestigious award is presented by the USTA during the US Open . Facilities are evaluated on the set criteria with only those facilities scoring high in all areas considered to win . The areas that the USTA look at are : ( 1 ) Overall layout and adaptation to site ( 2 ) Excellence of court surface and lights ( 3 ) Ease of maintenance ( 4 ) Accommodations for players , spectators , and press / officials ( 5 ) Overall Aesthetics : graphics , use of signs , landscaping , etc . ( 6 ) Amenities : casual seating for spectators , food services , and social area ( 7 ) Club programs supporting the USTA and growth of the game .

HBCC Tennis offers many great programs . Which program would you recommend to beginning players ?

L : We have many programs here at HBCC that help all players improve and reach their goals . For our junior players we have the Little Stars ( ages 5 to 7 ), Rising Stars ( ages 8 to 10 ), and Heavy Hitters ( 10 +). The programs are designed to allow each player , no matter what level , to gain the instruction they need in a fun environment . For the adults , we have a number of adult clinics throughout the week which are for players of all levels . The trained Pros run drills designed to maximize the experience for every player . I would also suggest to any new adult players to take advantage of a 30min evaluation lesson and our Friday Night Social so we can set them with players of similar level and discuss personal goals .

There are four main types of strings , each having different advantages : W H A T T Y P E O F S T R I N G S H O U L D I U S E ? Polyester Upsides : Durable . Lots of control . Lots of spin . Downsides : Harder of the arm . Loses tension faster Multi - filament Upsides : Great playability . Softer on the arm . Very good tension maintenance . Closest thing to natural gut . Downsides : Less control oriented . Doesn ’ t offer the solid feel some players like . Lacks durability for bigger hitters .

With many players on the courts less frequently during the winter months , we are all getting prepared for a busy spring season ! In talking to members about their upcoming increase in play , everyone looks to improve their forehand or backhand , or maybe even change their racquet . However , one of the most important and usually overlooked aspects in a good racquet ( and effects your play more than you think ) is racquet strings . Over the last 15 years , the greatest advancement in tennis technology has been

Synthetic Gut Upsides : Economically priced .

Downsides : Average overall performance and playability . Not extraordinary in any category .

Natural Gut Upsides : Optimum playability . Holds tension the best . Easy on the arm . Playability even at very high tensions . Downsides : High priced . Effected easily by weather

W H A T T E N S I O N S H O U L D I S T R I N G M Y R A C Q U E T A T ? In addition to the type of string , the tension of the strings can make a huge difference . Each racquet has a specific tension range , however the tensions throughout this range allow the racquet to perform very differently . In general , a higher tension will offer more control and a lower tension will offer more power . To begin , we recommend starting in the middle and adjusting to your preferences from there .

with tennis strings . Are you taking advantage of this ?

For most players , a good rule of thumb is to have your racquet restrung as many times per year as you play in a week . For example , if you play 4 times per week , you should have your racquet restrung 4 times per year . When ignored , you may notice that even though strings have not broken , the racquet may feel as though you have no power , or “ dead .” Over time , the strings have lost tension and therefore playability . Horseshoe Bend CC Golf Members ,

With 2017 already rocking and rolling , many of you are looking at new equipment . We all want to hit the ball further and straighter . Many of you will consider lessons this year , but what about club fitting ? The days of picking a set of clubs off the rack are long gone . We are going to dig deep into the importance of club fitting , fitting terminology , and club options . When it comes to buying new clubs for 2017 , it is not all about make and model . The most important factor is being professionally fit . About 80 % of golfers have a fade to slice in their golf swing . Yes , most of this is caused by the individual swing , but not in all cases . There are many circumstances that improperly fit clubs cause the ball to slice .

SHAFT LENGTH - To measure

for shaft length , most professionals use a 48 inch aluminum straight edge to

measure an individual ’ s wrist - to - floor . Most manufactures have a recommended height - to - wrist - to - floor ratio . For example , if you are 5 ’ 10 ” and your wrist - to - floor is between 33 - 37 inches , you would fit in a standard length club .

Now , let ’ s take a look at a few terms associated with club fitting :

SHAFT FLEX of a shaft when forces are applied . What this means is the higher the swing speed , the stiffer the shaft needs to be . Obviously , the above statement is not true in all cases , but is a good rule of thumb . - This term refers to the bend
