The increase in rockslide data availability and quality through technological advancements has helped make these predictive models more accurate, increasing life safety while minimizing impacts on industry and human movement. But that does not mean good old-fashioned notetaking has lost its value. For example, Sturzenegger noted the value of having geohazard management programs, especially at mining sites, to elevate awareness of any potential rockslide risks. In addition to increasing safety, Sturzenegger listed several actions that can help with data collection: “Having as part of those geohazard management programs a way for owners or people working at [a site] to actually write their observations; go take some pictures, and [note] basic characterizations like how big it is; what was involved in this kind of thing; what were the weather conditions.” While there is no centralized authority with which to submit that data, anybody who notices a rockslide can attempt to collect as much data as possible on it – without risking their safety – and hold onto it until their next encounter with a geoscientist or engineer doing rockslide surveys. “All this information can be very valuable for us as engineers and geoscientists,” Sturzenegger said, highlighting the value of collaboration and open-source data to the professions.
